How to play Sitcomdle

Learn to turn five clues into your next guess. Each day you have eight attempts to identify one mystery character, and you can practice between daily rounds.

By Sitcomdle

Your first round

  1. Type a character's name, then select the matching suggestion. Familiar nicknames and alternate names work too.
  2. Read the five clue values. They describe your guess; their colors show how that guess compares with the mystery character.
  3. Keep the clues that match, then use the arrows and remaining clues to choose your next name.
  4. Find the exact character within 8 guesses. After the round, open the answer's guide to learn more or share your result grid.

The five clues explained

Show
The sitcom the character belongs to. Green when it is the same show; there is no close band.
Debut
The year of the character's first episode. Amber within 3 years; the arrow points toward the answer's debut year.
Network
The network that first aired the show: NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, FX, HBO, CBC, or Apple TV+. Green or red only.
Role
Lead (the show's single central character), Main (main cast in at least one season), or Recurring (never main cast).
Gender
Male or Female. Green when the character's gender matches.

Arrows point toward the answer: an up arrow means a later year and a down arrow means an earlier year. A red year clue still gives you a useful direction; the answer is outside that clue's amber range.

A worked example: Liz Lemon and Michael Scott

This teaching example is independent of today's puzzle.

Guess Liz Lemon when the mystery character is Michael Scott.

The show and gender do not match, but the network and role do. The debut years are close, and the down arrow tells you to try an earlier debut. Keep the matching clues while changing the others.

Compare the Liz Lemon guide and Michael Scott guide between rounds.

Use matching clues without getting stuck

Five green clue cells can describe more than one character. You still need the exact name to finish the round. If a guess matches every clue but the game continues, try another character with those same attributes. Browse the full character library to compare names and connections.

Daily play, Practice, and sharing

The daily puzzle changes at midnight on your device's clock. Practice selects a random character for another round and keeps your daily board saved. Your streak and daily statistics stay in your own browser. A different browser or device has its own progress.

Share your colored grid after the round so friends can compare clues without seeing the answer. No account or download is needed to play.

Common rules questions

Do five green clues mean I have solved the puzzle?

Not necessarily. More than one character can share all five clue values. The round is solved when you guess the exact mystery character's name.

When does the daily puzzle reset?

A new mystery character appears at midnight on your device's clock. Players on the same local date get the same daily answer.

Will Practice change my daily streak?

No. Practice gives you another random character while keeping your daily board saved. Practice rounds do not add to your daily streak or daily statistics.
