Eddie Winslow is the oldest Winslow kid, more interested in girls, cars, and basketball than homework. Played by Darius McCrary for all nine seasons of Family Matters, he grows from a curfew-breaking teen into a Chicago police officer like his dad.
On Family Matters, Eddie Winslow's story runs through Carl Winslow (Father), Laura Winslow (Sister), and Steve Urkel (Best Friend).
Other ABC sitcom characters from around the same time include Al Borland (Home Improvement) and D.J. Tanner (Full House).
Who is Eddie Winslow?
Eddie is the oldest child and, for most of the series, the only son of Carl and Harriette Winslow of Chicago. He is a high school jock and a mediocre student when the show begins, and his biggest worries are his curfew, his car, and his next date. His father is a strict Chicago police officer, which guarantees a steady supply of conflict.
Eddie's best friends are Waldo Faldo and, eventually, Steve Urkel. Steve adores him, calls him "Eddo," and considers him his best bud long before Eddie returns the feeling, but over time Eddie comes to see the nerd next door as a true friend.
Personality and comedy
Eddie wants all the freedom of adulthood with none of the responsibility. When he gets into trouble, whether gambling debts, a wrecked family car, or an overpriced bar tab he was scammed into, his first instinct is to fix it himself and hope his father never finds out. That plan rarely works, and Carl's reactions are a big part of the show's humor.
He is also a charmer who dates a long line of girlfriends, and his friendship with goofy Waldo produces some of the show's silliest subplots. Beneath the swagger, Eddie has a good heart and, eventually, a sense of right and wrong that makes his father proud.
Key storylines
Eddie's early stories are about learning lessons the hard way, from a pool hustler in "Fast Eddie Winslow" to an illegal casino in "Busted." In "Good Cop, Bad Cop," one of the show's most serious episodes, Eddie is racially profiled by two white officers, and Carl has to confront the truth of his son's story.
Later, Eddie works his way up to manager at the Mighty Weenie restaurant and falls for Greta McClure, whose disapproving father is also his boss. College is a struggle, so he follows his father into police work, entering the academy in the final season and joining the Chicago Police Department as a rookie by the series finale.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Darius McCrary played Eddie from the pilot through the final episode, as Family Matters grew from a spin-off of Perfect Strangers into one of ABC's TGIF staples and then moved to CBS for its last season. His real-life brother, Donovan McCrary, guest-starred as a basketball rival in season five.
Eddie's arc from rebellious teen to young police officer gave the show a quieter coming-of-age story alongside Urkel's slapstick. "Good Cop, Bad Cop," which tackled racial profiling head on, stands out as one of the show's most serious episodes.
