Rosa Diaz is the scariest detective in the 99th Precinct, and she likes it that way. Played by Stephanie Beatriz, she hides a loyal heart behind a black leather jacket, a motorcycle, and a strict policy of never sharing personal details.
On Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Rosa Diaz's story runs through Jake Peralta (Academy Classmate), Charles Boyle (Admirer), Amy Santiago (Friend), Raymond Holt (Captain), and Doug Judy (Admirer).
Who is Rosa Diaz?
Rosa is a detective at the 99th Precinct and an old police academy classmate of Jake Peralta. She is smart, tough, and very good at her job, and her temper is so fearsome that coworkers will avoid walking past her desk when she is angry. Charles Boyle spends much of season one hopelessly trying to ask her out.
Almost everything about her is a mystery. Over the series, she lets slip that she was expelled from ballet school, spent time in juvenile detention, went to medical school and business school, and holds a pilot's license. Her neighbors know her by a different name, and the squad is never quite sure which stories are true.
Personality and comedy
Rosa is the deadpan straight woman of the squad, communicating through glares, grunts, and blunt one-word answers. Much of her comedy comes from contrast: she can be menacing in an interrogation and then reveal a surprising hobby, from gymnastics to making jewelry with bolt cutters.
Stephanie Beatriz has said she modeled Rosa's look on spaghetti Western heroes, a style she called robot-cowboy. Beneath the armor, Rosa slowly opens up to her friends, especially Jake, Amy, and Charles, and those small moments of vulnerability hit hard because she guards them so closely.
Key storylines
Rosa dates Holt's nephew Marcus in season two, then falls into a whirlwind romance with the unhinged ex-undercover detective Adrian Pimento, and the two get engaged mid-chase in season three before he has to vanish into hiding from a mob boss. At the end of season four, she and Jake are framed for bank robbery by Lieutenant Hawkins and sent to prison until the squad clears their names.
In season five, Rosa comes out as bisexual, first to Charles and then to the squad and her parents. Her father comes around, and she later repairs her relationship with her mother. In the final season, after losing faith in the NYPD, she leaves the force and becomes a private investigator, taking on cases for people mistreated by police.
Behind the scenes and legacy
The character was first written as a detective named Megan. Chelsea Peretti read for her before Gina was created for Peretti, and Stephanie Beatriz first read for Amy before casting director Allison Jones suggested she try this part instead. Once Beatriz was cast, the creators renamed the character Rosa Diaz.
Rosa's coming-out storyline, shaped with input from Beatriz, who is bisexual herself, was widely praised as thoughtful, honest representation. Beatriz won two Gracie Awards and an Imagen Award for the role, which became her breakout performance.
