On Everybody Loves Raymond, Debra Barone's story runs through Ray Barone (Husband), Marie Barone (Mother-in-law), Frank Barone (Father-in-law), and Robert Barone (Brother-in-law).

Other CBS sitcom characters from around the same time include Barney Stinson (How I Met Your Mother) and Lily Aldrin (How I Met Your Mother).

Debra Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Debra Barone?

Debra is married to sportswriter Ray Barone and is the mother of their daughter Ally and twin boys Geoffrey and Michael. The family lives in Lynbrook, Long Island, directly across the street from Ray's parents, Frank and Marie, and his older brother Robert, which means her house is never really her own. Most episodes begin with a Barone walking in unannounced.

She grew up in a wealthy, buttoned-up family, the daughter of Warren and Lois Whelan, and before marriage she worked in public relations for the New York Rangers. Married life on Long Island is a long way from that world, and much of the show's comedy comes from a capable, well-educated woman trying to keep her patience inside a loud Italian American family that has opinions about everything she does.

Personality and comedy

Debra is the straight woman in a house full of clowns, but she is far from a pushover. She is quick, sarcastic, and fierce when pushed, and Ray's habit of dodging responsibility sets off some of the series' biggest blowups. Patricia Heaton plays her frustration with real bite, so the arguments feel like a marriage rather than a setup for a punchline.

The richest running thread is her cold war with Marie. Her mother-in-law questions her cooking, her housekeeping, and her parenting, usually with a smile, and Debra rarely says what she really thinks to Marie's face. She gets along far better with Robert, who treats her kindly, and with Frank, who openly prefers her to his own sons.

Key storylines

Early on, Debra tries to put her relationship with Marie on honest footing. In "The Letter" she writes down how Marie makes her feel, the letter gets out, and Frank reads it aloud to the whole family. In "Marie's Meatballs" she asks for Marie's recipe, only to learn Marie has been quietly sabotaging the ingredients so Debra's version never comes out right.

Flashback episodes fill in her history, including how she met Ray when he delivered a futon to her apartment, and the show explains that learning she was pregnant with twins is what pushed the couple out of their apartment and into the house across the street from his parents. Later seasons put her through her own parents' divorce, which leaves her shaken, and through long standoffs with Ray, most famously the suitcase on the stairs in "Baggage" that neither of them will carry up.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Patricia Heaton had already starred in three short-lived sitcoms, Room for Two, Someone Like Me, and Women of the House, before Raymond made her a household name. She won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2000 and 2001, and she was nominated for the role in each of the show's last seven seasons. Her 2000 win made her the first member of the cast to take home an Emmy.

After Raymond ended in 2005, Heaton went on to play another overstretched mom, Frankie Heck, on ABC's The Middle. Many fans see Debra as a smart sitcom wife who is funny in her own right rather than just the person who rolls her eyes at her husband.
