Hilary Banks from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Hilary Banks?

Hilary is the oldest of the Banks children and the one who has embraced the Bel-Air lifestyle most completely. When Will arrives, she looks down on her cousin from Philadelphia and spends her time shopping, dating, and avoiding work. Early on it comes out that she has quietly dropped out of college.

Over the course of the series she slowly builds a life of her own. She bounces through odd jobs, lands a gig as a TV weather girl, and eventually hosts her own talk show, all while staying blissfully self-centered.

Personality and comedy

Hilary is vain, spoiled, and not especially interested in anyone else's problems, and the show plays that for big laughs. Karyn Parsons makes her airhead logic oddly endearing, and Hilary's sense of entitlement collides with the real world every time her father cuts off her money.

She is not entirely shallow, though. Hilary loves her family, especially when they need her, and her wide-eyed confidence carries her into places nobody expects her to succeed. That mix of cluelessness and luck is the heart of her character.

Key storylines

In season one, Hilary takes a job as an assistant to a verbally abusive actress, played by Queen Latifah. In season two, Philip cuts up her credit cards, and Will lies on a job application to help her land a catering job. In season three she becomes a weather girl at a local TV station and falls for the anchorman, Trevor.

Tragedy hits at the start of season four, when Trevor dies while proposing to her, and her grief lingers through the season. Later that season she poses for Playboy, to Philip's fury. Her talk show grows until it goes national in season six, and in the series finale she moves to New York.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Karyn Parsons played Hilary for all six seasons and also appeared as Hilary in a crossover episode of Blossom. Hilary's storylines brought in some notable guest stars, including Queen Latifah as her demanding first boss, Marissa Redman, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner of The Cosby Show as one of her love interests in season two.

Hilary remains one of the show's most quotable characters, and fans often single out her deadpan reactions and self-absorbed one-liners as highlights of the series. Her slow climb from spoiled daughter to national talk show host is one of the show's quietly satisfying arcs.
