Vivian Banks, Will's Aunt Viv, is the warm, sharp-minded matriarch of the Banks mansion and the first person in Bel-Air to take Will's side. She was played by Janet Hubert in seasons one through three and by Daphne Maxwell Reid in seasons four through six, one of the most famous recasts in sitcom history.

Who is Vivian Banks?

Vivian is the sister of Will's mother, Vy, and the wife of Philip Banks. As Will's blood relative, she shares a bond with him that the rest of the household has to build. She is the mother of Hilary, Carlton, and Ashley, and in season three she gives birth to a fourth child, Nicky.

Unlike many sitcom moms of the era, Vivian has a career of her own as an educator. She teaches college students, leads a Black history class at Will's school, and at one point considers trading the classroom for her old dream of being a dancer.

Personality and comedy

Aunt Viv is gracious but tough. She is the parent most likely to defend Will when he first arrives, and also the one most likely to correct him with a well-placed lesson about history or respect. She is also the only person in the house who can reliably stop Philip mid-rant.

Both actresses brought her strength forward. Fans often describe Janet Hubert's Vivian as the fierier of the two, and Daphne Maxwell Reid's version, who arrives as Will starts college, as the gentler one.

Key storylines

In season one, Vivian teaches the Black history class Will proposes, piles extra work on him and Carlton, and makes it clear that one famous book is only the start of the story. In season two, her 40th birthday prompts her to revisit her dance ambitions before she returns to teaching. Early in season three she announces she is pregnant, and the family scatters across Los Angeles on the day she goes into labor with Nicky.

In season six, Vivian leaves Philip after he makes a major political decision without consulting her, and the kids stage a Hawaiian-themed dinner to bring them back together. In the series finale she and Philip sell the house and move to New York with Nicky.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Janet Hubert left after season three. For years many fans assumed she had been fired, but at the cast's 2020 reunion Hubert said she was not fired: she was offered what she called a bad deal to return for season four and turned it down. She and Will Smith have since reconciled after years of tension.

Daphne Maxwell Reid played Vivian from season four to the end of the series. Fans still debate which Aunt Viv they prefer, and the question has followed the show for decades.
