J. Peterman runs the clothing catalog where Elaine works in the last seasons of Seinfeld, and he talks about everything as if it were a far-off adventure. John O'Hurley plays him with a booming, theatrical voice that turns ordinary errands into epic tales.
On Seinfeld, J. Peterman's story runs through Elaine Benes (Employee), Cosmo Kramer (Story Seller), Jerry Seinfeld (Acquaintance), George Costanza, and Frank Costanza.
Who is J. Peterman?
Peterman is the founder and head of the J. Peterman Company, a catalog that sells clothing with romantic, exotic backstories. He meets Elaine by chance on the street, recites the history of her jacket, and hires her on the spot as a catalog writer.
For the rest of the series he is her eccentric, unpredictable boss. He travels the world, spent part of his childhood in Costa Rica, and treats Elaine as both an employee and an audience for his stories.
Personality and comedy
The joke is in his voice. Peterman describes even mundane things in lush, dramatic, faraway detail, and O'Hurley has said he based the delivery on 1940s radio drama with a touch of newsman Charles Kuralt. He never seems to notice how strange he sounds.
He is also wildly impulsive. Peterman will send Elaine to an auction with a blank check, disappear overseas, or fire her for reasons that make sense only to him, and then welcome her back as if nothing happened.
Key storylines
Peterman fires Elaine as "an addict in denial" after she fails a drug test, which turns out to be caused by poppy seed muffins, and a clean result gets her rehired. He sends her to buy John F. Kennedy's golf clubs at auction, has a breakdown and flees to Burma, leaving her in charge of the company, and fires her again when she admits she hated The English Patient.
In season eight, he hires Elaine to ghostwrite his autobiography and ends up buying Kramer's life stories to fill it. When the book comes out, Kramer crashes Peterman's book signing claiming to be the real Peterman, gets thrown out, and starts selling tickets to his own Peterman Reality Tour.
Behind the scenes and legacy
The character is a comic take on John Peterman, founder of the real J. Peterman Company. Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld were amused by the catalog's florid, adventure-story product descriptions, which inspired the role. John O'Hurley played Peterman in 22 episodes across the final three seasons.
Peterman's monologues are among the most quoted bits of late Seinfeld, and the character helped make O'Hurley a familiar face, later including a stint hosting Family Feud.
