Kitty Forman is the warm, chatty heart of the Forman house, always ready with a snack, a hug, or a nervous laugh. Played by Debra Jo Rupp, she can also turn icy in a heartbeat when someone pushes her too far.

On That '70s Show, Kitty Forman's story runs through Red Forman (Husband), Eric Forman (Son), Steven Hyde (Foster Son), Donna Pinciotti (Neighbor), Fez (Ex-son-in-law), and Jackie Burkhart (Son's Friend).

Who is Kitty Forman?

Kitty is Red's wife and the mother of Eric and Laurie. She works as a nurse at the local hospital, and her paycheck matters even more whenever Red is out of work. Her maiden name is Sigurdson, and her parents, Burt and Bea, turn up for occasional visits.

She treats her son's friends like extra children. When Hyde's mother abandons him, Kitty helps talk Red into taking him in, and she becomes the closest thing to a mother that Hyde, Fez, and later Jackie have in Point Place.

Personality and comedy

Kitty is relentlessly upbeat on the surface, and her trademark giggle punctuates many of her scenes. She worries about everyone, smothers Eric with affection, and loves nothing more than throwing a party. That sweetness makes it all the funnier when she snaps and puts the whole household, Red included, in its place.

The show also gives her real struggles. She has a history with alcohol and slips back into drinking at times, and her mood swings become a running storyline once she starts going through menopause. Debra Jo Rupp plays both sides, the sunshine and the storm, with warmth.

Key storylines

Many of Kitty's arcs are about letting go. When she learns Eric and Donna are having sex in season two, she takes to her bed, unable to accept that her baby is growing up. She also wants another child of her own, and in season five she announces a pregnancy that turns into a menopause storyline instead.

She loses her father, Burt, midway through season five, and she spends much of season six nursing Red after his heart attack and pouring out his beer to protect his heart. In the finale she and Red decide not to sell the house, staying in Point Place as Eric comes home for New Year's Eve.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Debra Jo Rupp played Kitty for all eight seasons. Along with Kurtwood Smith, she is one of only two original cast members who are main cast on the Netflix sequel That '90s Show, which premiered in 2023.

In the sequel, Kitty is thrilled to have a new group of teenagers in her basement when granddaughter Leia spends the summer, and she remains the same loving, overbearing Kitty fans remember.
