Norm Peterson may be the most loyal customer in sitcom history: he is at Cheers nearly every waking hour, and the whole bar yells "Norm!" when he arrives. Played by George Wendt, he is a laid-back, quick-witted barfly whose one-liners about beer, work, and his wife Vera became a signature of the show.
On Cheers, Norm Peterson's story runs through Cliff Clavin (Best Friend), Sam Malone (Bartender and friend), Carla Tortelli (Waitress), Woody Boyd (Bartender), and Frasier Crane (Fellow regular).
Who is Norm Peterson?
Norm is the bar's most devoted regular, a big, friendly man who would rather sit on his stool with a beer than do almost anything else. He starts the series as an accountant who has trouble holding onto a job, and he later stumbles into a second career as a house painter and interior decorator.
He is married to Vera, who is mentioned constantly but almost never seen. Norm cracks jokes about his marriage constantly, usually at Vera's expense, but the show makes clear that he loves her in his own low-key way.
Personality and comedy
Norm's comedy is built on rhythm. Every time he walks in, someone behind the bar asks how he is doing, and he answers with a dry, perfectly timed one-liner before the room calls out his name. He is unhurried and unflappable, and he can make sitting still look like a full-time job.
He is also smarter and kinder than his lifestyle suggests. Norm is Cliff's best friend and most patient listener, a steady presence for Sam, and the guy who usually ends up saying the honest, decent thing when a storyline needs it.
Key storylines
Norm's working life drifts from one setback to the next. After losing accounting jobs, he discovers a talent for painting when he repaints Rebecca's office to work off his enormous bar tab, and painting and decorating becomes his new trade. In the final season he lands a dream job as a corporate beer taster.
The show teases Vera for years. In "Thanksgiving Orphans," she finally appears, only for a pie to hit her in the face before the audience can see her. In the series finale, it is Norm who sits with Sam at the end of the night and tells him that the bar is where he truly belongs.
Behind the scenes and legacy
George Wendt originally auditioned for a tiny role named George that had a single line in the pilot. The producers liked him so much that they expanded the part into Norm, and John Ratzenberger, who had auditioned for the same role, ended up creating Cliff Clavin instead.
Wendt was nominated for multiple Emmys for the role, and he, Ted Danson, and Rhea Perlman were the only actors to appear in every episode. Norm's entrance is one of the most imitated gags in television. He reprised Norm on Frasier in the 2002 episode "Cheerful Goodbyes."
