- Frasier Winslow Crane, Dr. Frasier Crane
Dr. Frasier Crane is a snobbish, well-meaning psychiatrist who dispenses advice to Seattle on the radio while his own life keeps falling into farce. Played by Kelsey Grammer across Cheers, Frasier, and a revival, he is one of the longest-running characters in American television.
On Frasier, Frasier Crane's story runs through Niles Crane (Brother), Martin Crane (Father), Daphne Moon (Father's caregiver, later sister-in-law), Roz Doyle (Producer), Lilith Sternin (Ex-wife), and Sam Malone (Old friend).
Who is Frasier Crane?
Frasier is a psychiatrist who first appeared on Cheers as Diane Chambers's love interest and stayed on as a bar regular. After his marriage to Lilith ends, he moves back to his hometown of Seattle and becomes the host of The Dr. Frasier Crane Show, a call-in advice program on radio station KACL.
His plans for a refined bachelor life are upended in the first episode, when his father, Martin, a retired police detective, needs a place to live after being injured. Martin moves into Frasier's elegant apartment along with a battered recliner and a Jack Russell terrier named Eddie, and Frasier hires Daphne Moon to help care for him.
Personality and comedy
Frasier's comedy comes from the gap between his intelligence and his self-awareness. He loves opera, fine wine, and expensive furniture, and he cannot resist lecturing anyone who will listen. He gives sensible advice to his radio callers, then ignores all of it in his own life, usually with spectacular results.
His relationships with his brother Niles and his father Martin are the heart of the show. The brothers compete over everything from wine clubs to restaurant reservations, while Martin's plain-spoken common sense keeps puncturing their pretensions. Under the bluster, Frasier is generous, loyal, and desperate to be loved.
Key storylines
On Cheers, Frasier is jilted at the altar by Diane, finds his match in fellow psychiatrist Lilith Sternin, and becomes a father to their son, Frederick. On Frasier, he searches for love through eleven seasons of disastrous dates and brief romances, while old Cheers friends Sam, Diane, Woody, Cliff, and Norm turn up for memorable visits.
In the 2004 finale, "Goodnight, Seattle," Frasier accepts a television job in San Francisco but boards a plane that lands in Chicago, where his girlfriend Charlotte has moved. The 2023 Paramount+ revival brings him back to Boston, where he teaches at Harvard and reconnects with his grown son, Freddy.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Kelsey Grammer first played Frasier in the Cheers season three premiere in 1984, as a rival for Diane's affections, in a part meant to last only a few episodes. He became so popular that he earned his own spinoff, which ran for eleven seasons and won 37 Emmys, including five straight wins for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Grammer won four Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Frasier, in 1994, 1995, 1998, and 2004. Counting Cheers and Frasier, he played the role on prime-time television for twenty years, tying James Arness's run as Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke at the time, and the revival extended that run even further.
