Reese is the brother who hits first and thinks later, if he thinks at all. Played by Justin Berfield, he is the most punished kid in the house and usually the one who started the trouble.

On Malcolm in the Middle, Reese's story runs through Malcolm (Younger Brother), Dewey (Younger Brother), Francis (Older Brother), Lois (Mother), and Hal (Father).

Who is Reese?

Reese is the second-oldest of Hal and Lois's sons, a year older than Malcolm. At the start of the series he is the top bully at school and the brother most likely to be grounded at any moment, which he treats as a normal part of life. He torments Malcolm and Dewey, does as little schoolwork as possible, and leans on the gifted kids to do it for him.

For all that, Reese is fiercely protective of his family when outsiders come after them, and his grandmother Ida considers him her favorite grandson. He is also, to everyone's shock, a gifted cook and baker.

Personality and comedy

Reese's comedy is big, physical, and fearless. He is impulsive, easily outwitted, and often the last person in the room to understand what is happening, but he can lock onto a single task like driving or cooking with startling focus. His elaborate plans tend to collapse spectacularly, usually on him.

Justin Berfield plays him with total commitment, whether Reese is scheming against his brothers, falling hopelessly for the wrong girl, or getting outmaneuvered by Dewey. The show also lets him have rare moments of sweetness that make his usual bad behavior even funnier.

Key storylines

In season two, Hal makes Reese take a cooking class as punishment, and he discovers he is a culinary natural. In season five, after an unspeakable offense, Reese is kicked out and briefly lives in his own apartment, then later runs off to join the Army under a fake name after a breakup. In season six he panics, deserts in Afghanistan, and has to be retrieved by Lois herself.

In season seven, Grandma Ida arranges a marriage between Reese and her helper Raduca, who turns out to be using him for a green card. By the finale, Reese has moved in with Craig Feldspar and taken a job as an assistant janitor at North High, his old school.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Justin Berfield played Reese throughout the original run, alongside Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, and Reese became a fan favorite for his combination of brute force and surprising talent. Many of the show's most quoted cold opens and set pieces put Reese at the center of the destruction.

Berfield reprised the role for the 2026 revival, Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, in which Reese reflects on his failed marriages while helping Hal with repairs around the house.
