Rose Nylund is the kindest person in Miami and possibly the most confusing storyteller on television. Played by Betty White, she is naive, competitive, and endlessly optimistic, with a St. Olaf tale for every occasion.
On The Golden Girls, Rose Nylund's story runs through Blanche Devereaux (Roommate and Landlady), Dorothy Zbornak (Roommate), and Sophia Petrillo (Roommate).
Other NBC sitcom characters from around the same time include Woody Boyd (Cheers) and Lilith Sternin (Cheers).
Who is Rose Nylund?
Rose grew up in St. Olaf, a small farming town in Minnesota full of Norwegian American families and very strange local customs. She was happily married to Charlie Nylund and raised five children with him. After Charlie's death she moved to Miami and was the first to answer Blanche's ad for roommates.
In the early seasons Rose works at a grief counseling center. Later she switches careers and becomes the assistant to Enrique Mas, a consumer reporter at a local TV station, a job she lands after complaining to him about age discrimination.
Personality and comedy
Rose's comedy comes from total sincerity. She takes jokes literally, launches into long stories about St. Olaf's odd traditions and eccentric neighbors, and often misses the point of a conversation entirely, to Dorothy's visible despair. Many of the show's jokes play on how sheltered she seems.
The writers balance that with real backbone. Rose is fiercely competitive, stubborn when she believes she is right, and deeply loyal to her friends. Betty White's warmth made Rose the character audiences most wanted to protect, and some of the series' most emotional moments belong to her.
Key storylines
Rose's first romance after Charlie, with a man named Arnie, comes in the third episode, and a later boyfriend dies in her bed, sending her into a spiral of guilt. Her biggest relationship arrives in season five with college professor Miles Webber, who is revealed in season six to have been living under the Witness Protection Program after keeping books for a mobster.
Rose also wins St. Olaf's Woman of the Year, fights to support herself when Charlie's pension is cut off, meets her biological father, and, in the final season, suffers a heart attack at a high school reunion and undergoes triple bypass surgery while her friends wait to hear if she will survive.
Behind the scenes and legacy
The producers first imagined Betty White as the man-hungry Blanche, based on her famous turn as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. At director Jay Sandrich's suggestion, White and Rue McClanahan swapped roles, and White won the 1986 Emmy for lead actress in a comedy for "In a Bed of Rose's." She was nominated in that category every year of the show's run.
White went on to play Rose again in the CBS spin-off The Golden Palace, which ran for one season from 1992 to 1993 and began streaming on Hulu in January 2022 as a tribute marking what would have been her 100th birthday.
