The Golden Girls follows four women of a certain age who share a house in Miami. Dorothy Zbornak is a sharp, sardonic substitute teacher; Rose Nylund is a sweet widow full of strange stories from St. Olaf, Minnesota; and Blanche Devereaux is a Southern belle with a busy social calendar. Dorothy's tiny, unfiltered mother Sophia Petrillo rounds out the household.
Many of the best scenes happen late at night around the kitchen table, usually over cheesecake. The show was frank and funny about dating, aging, and friendship in a way television rarely allowed for older characters.
Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty each won an Emmy for their roles, and the show remains a favorite for new generations of fans.
