Stephanie Tanner is the middle child of the Tanner family, a quick-witted girl with big opinions and an even bigger habit of eavesdropping. Played by Jodie Sweetin, she gave Full House one of its most quoted catchphrases.
On Full House, Stephanie Tanner's story runs through Danny Tanner (Father), D.J. Tanner (Sister), Michelle Tanner (Sister), Jesse Katsopolis (Uncle), and Joey Gladstone (Honorary Uncle).
Who is Stephanie Tanner?
Stephanie is Danny and Pam Tanner's second daughter, younger than D.J. and older than Michelle. When the series begins she is about to start kindergarten, and the first season follows the three grown men of the house tagging along on her first day of school.
As the middle child, she spends a lot of the show squeezed between her sisters. She shares a room with D.J., then with Michelle, and much of her comedy comes from wanting to be included in D.J.'s teenage world while being stuck with the little kid.
Personality and comedy
Stephanie is the family's commentator. She is curious, sarcastic for her age, and constantly snooping, which gets her into trouble with D.J. and gives the show endless setups. Her outraged "How rude!" became her signature, along with lines like "Well, pin a rose on your nose!"
She also gets some of the series' most serious storylines. The writers used Stephanie to show a kid wrestling with honesty, insecurity, and growing up, and Jodie Sweetin's timing let the character move from punchlines to real emotion within a single episode.
Key storylines
Early Stephanie stories are about small-kid problems, like getting glasses and trying to look cool, or becoming the star pitcher on Danny's Little League team. In season six, she learns that her school project partner is being abused by his father and has to decide whether to tell an adult, one of the show's most serious episodes.
In season seven, Stephanie starts junior high and stands up to a crowd that pressures her to smoke. In the final season she falls in with a rebellious new friend, Gia. That friendship leads her to an unsupervised make-out party and later a reckless car ride with older boys, and when the boys crash on a later ride without her, Stephanie realizes how close she came to real danger.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Jodie Sweetin played Stephanie for all eight seasons, joining the show as a young child. "How rude!" became a lasting piece of 1990s pop culture, still quoted by fans who grew up watching the show.
Sweetin returned for the Netflix sequel Fuller House, where Stephanie comes home from London as a DJ, moves in to help D.J. raise her sons, and later starts a family of her own with Kimmy's brother Jimmy, whom she marries in the final episode.
