Abed Nadir from Community: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Abed Nadir?

Abed is the son of a Palestinian father and a Polish American mother, and after his mother left the family when he was six, he found comfort in movies and television. His father wants him to take over the family falafel restaurant, but Abed persuades him to let him study film at Greendale instead.

He joins the study group in the pilot at Britta's invitation, and his blunt honesty and unusual social rhythms make him the group's wild card. The show strongly implies that Abed is on the autism spectrum, and creator Dan Harmon has said he came to see a lot of himself in the character.

Personality and comedy

Abed processes the world through pop culture. He frames the group's everyday problems as movie plots, narrates a chicken finger racket like a mob film, and warns his friends when an argument is about to turn into a bottle episode. He can slip into characters such as Batman or Han Solo at will, and he often comments on the show's own structure as if he can see the cameras.

His closest bond is with Troy, and the two share a goofy, wholehearted friendship that includes a pretend morning show, "Troy and Abed in the Morning," and an elaborate blanket fort. That friendship is the heart of the middle seasons, and it gives Abed's sometimes guarded personality a warm counterpart.

Key storylines

Abed drives many of Community's genre experiments. In "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" he starts seeing the world as stop-motion animation, and the group has to work out what is really troubling him. In "Critical Film Studies" he stages a dinner with Jeff modeled on My Dinner with Andre, and in season three a disagreement with Troy over pillows and blankets escalates into a campus-wide war told like a Ken Burns documentary.

Abed dates Rachel, a coat check worker played by Brie Larson, in seasons four and five. Troy's departure in season five hits him hard, and he copes by turning the whole school into a game of The Floor Is Lava. In the series finale, Abed reveals he is moving to Los Angeles to work as a production assistant on a TV show.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Abed is based on Abed Gheith, a real friend of Dan Harmon's who auditioned for the part. The character was written as Palestinian and became half Polish when Danny Pudi, who is of Polish and Indian descent, won the role after auditioning four times. Kumail Nanjiani was the other finalist.

Paste named Abed the best TV character of 2011, and critics have praised the show for letting a neurodivergent character be loved, flawed, and fully drawn. His line "six seasons and a movie," from "Paradigms of Human Memory," became the fans' rallying cry during the show's cancellation scares, and Peacock announced a Community movie in 2022, with Pudi confirmed to return.
