Shirley Bennett is the study group's devoted Christian mom, a sweet-voiced baker with a temper she works hard to keep in check. Played by Yvette Nicole Brown, she comes to Greendale hoping to launch a brownie business and ends up co-owning a sandwich shop.
On Community, Shirley Bennett's story runs through Pierce Hawthorne (Business Partner), Ben Chang (Halloween Fling), Jeff Winger (Childhood Foosball Victim), Annie Edison (Friend), and Britta Perry (Friend).
Who is Shirley Bennett?
Shirley is a recently divorced mother who goes back to school at Greendale to turn her love of baking into a business. Her marriage to Andre has fallen apart, and she joins the Spanish study group in the pilot as one of its original members.
She is a devout Christian, and her faith is central to how she sees the world. That sometimes puts her at odds with her friends, especially when she tries to bring them around to her beliefs, but she usually finds a way to put friendship first.
Personality and comedy
Shirley speaks in a gentle, friendly voice, but beneath that warmth is a quick temper and a formidable competitive streak. She openly admits to using guilt to get her way, and the show gets big laughs out of the moments when her sweetness drops away and the real Shirley comes out swinging.
In season three Jeff discovers that Shirley, once known as Big Cheddar, was the foosball bully who humiliated him at a YMCA when they were kids. Moments like that reveal a tougher, more complicated woman under the group mom role, and Yvette Nicole Brown plays both sides with relish.
Key storylines
After the season two Halloween party, Shirley discovers she is pregnant, and a voicemail suggests Ben Chang could be the father. The baby arrives during the group's anthropology final in "Applied Anthropology and Culinary Arts," and he turns out to be Andre's. Grateful for the way Chang calmed her down during labor, Shirley names her son Ben anyway.
In season three Andre proposes again and the couple remarry in "Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts," while Shirley teams up with Pierce on a campus sandwich shop. Season five finds the marriage over again and Shirley focused on her business, and in the season six premiere she leaves for Atlanta to care for her ailing father, returning for the series finale.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Yvette Nicole Brown was a main cast member for the first five seasons and appeared as a guest in season six. The show turned Shirley's absence into a meta joke: Abed claims she was spun off, and the closing credits run a fake ad for a police procedural about Shirley and a detective called The Butcher and the Baker.
After Peacock ordered a Community movie in 2022, Dan Harmon said Brown would also return. Shirley remains a fan favorite for the way she balances warmth and menace, often in the same sentence.
