Howard Cunningham runs Cunningham Hardware in Milwaukee and heads the family at the center of Happy Days, known to Richie's friends simply as "Mr. C." Played by Tom Bosley, he is the steady, slightly grumpy, deeply decent dad who appears in every one of the show's 255 episodes.
On Happy Days, Howard Cunningham's story runs through Marion Cunningham (Wife), Richie Cunningham (Son), and Arthur Fonzarelli (Tenant).
Other ABC sitcom characters from around the same time include D.J. Tanner (Full House) and Danny Tanner (Full House).
Who is Howard Cunningham?
Howard is the husband of Marion and the father of Richie, Joanie, and, in the earliest seasons, Chuck. He owns a hardware store, drives a beloved DeSoto, and belongs to Leopard Lodge No. 462, where he eventually rises to the rank of Grand Poobah. He served in the Army as a young man, working as a cook.
He is the model 1950s father: traditional, practical, and occasionally stuffy, but warm underneath. Richie's friends call him "Mr. C," and over the years his home becomes a kind of clubhouse for the whole gang, with Howard as the grown-up everyone eventually comes to for advice.
Personality and comedy
Howard's humor is dry and down to earth. He grumbles about money, dotes on his old DeSoto, and would usually rather have a quiet evening than wade into teenage drama. Bosley plays him with a slow-burn exasperation that makes his rare blowups funnier.
What makes him memorable is how often that grumbling gives way to wisdom. Many episodes find Howard sitting Richie down for a quiet talk about honesty or responsibility. His relationship with Fonzie is another highlight: he starts out wary of the leather-clad hood and ends up treating him almost like a son.
Key storylines
When competition squeezes the hardware store at the start of season three, Howard decides to rent out the room above the family garage, and Richie hands it to Fonzie. Howard is horrified at first and plans to send him packing, but the arrangement sticks and Fonzie becomes part of the family. Other Howard stories range from a gloomy 45th birthday and a midlife urge to flee to Tahiti, to a wedding at the Cunningham home for an old Army buddy that stirs up prejudice among the neighbors.
Howard's marriage to Marion gets its own arc too, with anniversary spats, a vow renewal, and the occasional bout of jealousy. As the kids grow up and leave, he and Marion have to figure out how to fill a suddenly empty house. In the series finale, "Passages," he confronts an adoption agency on Fonzie's behalf so Fonzie can adopt a young orphan, then gives the toast at Joanie and Chachi's wedding.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Harold Gould played Howard in the 1972 Love, American Style segment that served as the show's pilot, but during a delay before production he took a stage role abroad and chose to honor that commitment. Tom Bosley took over, and he and Henry Winkler's Fonzie are the only two characters to appear in all 255 episodes. Bosley earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for the role in 1978.
Howard's final moment is one of the most famous sign-offs in sitcom history. At the end of "Passages," he turns to the camera, thanks the audience for being part of the family, and raises a glass to happy days. The same toast notes that both of his children are now married, a line that sealed the disappearance of oldest son Chuck, whose unexplained exit gave TV the term "Chuck Cunningham syndrome."
