Marion Cunningham keeps the Cunningham household running in 1950s Milwaukee, mothering Richie and Joanie and, before long, Fonzie too. Played by Marion Ross, she is the kind, playful "Mrs. C" who every so often decides she wants a little more out of life than housework.
On Happy Days, Marion Cunningham's story runs through Howard Cunningham (Husband), Richie Cunningham (Son), and Arthur Fonzarelli (Like a Son).
Other ABC sitcom characters from around the same time include D.J. Tanner (Full House) and Danny Tanner (Full House).
Who is Marion Cunningham?
Marion, born Marion Kelp, is Howard's wife and the mother of Richie, Joanie, and, in the first two seasons, Chuck. She is a homemaker who cooks, cleans, and keeps the peace while Howard runs the hardware store, and her kitchen is where much of the family's life on the show happens.
She is also the gang's surrogate mom. Richie's friends call her "Mrs. C," and once Fonzie moves into the apartment over the garage, she becomes the closest thing he has to a mother. She is the only person allowed to call him by his real first name, Arthur, which she does with obvious affection.
Personality and comedy
Marion is gentle and sweet, but she is no pushover. She has a mischievous streak, a soft spot for romance, and a habit of nudging Howard when he gets too set in his ways. Ross gives her a bright, slightly giggly warmth that makes her scenes with Bosley feel like a real long marriage.
The show's best Marion episodes are about her restlessness. Every few seasons she gets tired of being taken for granted and does something about it: entering a dance contest, taking a job, joining the community theater. Those stories let her be funny on her own terms instead of just reacting to the kids.
Key storylines
In season three Marion wants to enter a televised dance contest, and when Howard refuses she secretly partners with Fonzie, which leaves Howard suspecting an affair. In season four's "Marion Rebels," she quarrels with Howard about her life as a housewife and takes a job as a waitress at Arnold's, where she promptly starts critiquing the menu and steering kids away from junk food.
Later, a friend's divorce leaves her worried that Howard might trade her in for someone younger, so she throws herself into proving she is still young at heart. She also lands in jail after crashing Howard's cherished DeSoto into Arnold's, casts Fonzie as her leading man in a community production of The Rainmaker, and goes on a TV game show to win Lori Beth a trip to Greenland to marry Richie.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Marion Ross first played the role in the 1972 Love, American Style segment that became the pilot for Happy Days, and she stayed with the show for all 11 seasons. She appeared in nearly every episode, though sources differ slightly on exactly how many she missed. She later reprised Marion on the spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi.
Ross received Primetime Emmy nominations for the role in 1979 and 1984. Mrs. C remains one of TV's definitive sitcom moms, and Ross has kept sharing memories of the show and her castmates in the decades since, including in a run of brief MeTV appearances starting in 2015.
