Jim Halpert is the sharp, easygoing salesman at Dunder Mifflin Scranton who treats his job as a temporary stop and his pranks on Dwight as an art form. Played by John Krasinski, his slow-burning romance with Pam made them one of the most beloved couples on American television.

On The Office, Jim Halpert's story runs through Pam Beesly (Wife), Dwight Schrute (Prank Target), Michael Scott (Boss), Andy Bernard (Coworker), and Darryl Philbin (Athlead Colleague).

Jim Halpert from The Office: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Jim Halpert?

Jim is a sales representative at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch who insists, at least at first, that this is just a job and not a career. He sits across from Dwight, does solid work without seeming to try, and is consistently one of the branch's best salesmen. Next to Michael's chaos, he plays the calm, sensible straight man.

His real reason for coming in every day is Pam, the receptionist, who is engaged to warehouse worker Roy when the series begins. Their friendship, inside jokes, and long glances are the emotional center of the first three seasons.

Personality and comedy

Jim's signature move is the look: a pause, a glance straight into the documentary camera, and a silent invitation for the audience to share his disbelief. He is also the office's master prankster. Encasing Dwight's stapler in Jell-O, moving his desk into the men's room, and convincing him of increasingly absurd things are among the show's most famous bits, and Pam is usually his partner in crime.

The character is loosely based on Tim from the British series, but the American show gives him more room to grow. In later seasons he shows real vulnerability, from jealousy over a rival salesman who once dated Pam to the strain of chasing a new career in his final season.

Key storylines

In "Casino Night" Jim finally tells Pam he loves her and kisses her, but she stays with Roy, so he transfers to the Stamford branch and starts dating coworker Karen Filippelli. When the branches merge he comes back to Scranton, and in "The Job" he walks out of a corporate interview, drives back, and asks Pam to dinner. They are dating by the season four premiere.

Jim proposes at a rainy highway rest stop in "Weight Loss," and the couple sneak off to marry on a boat at Niagara Falls before their church ceremony in "Niagara." They have two children, Cece and Phillip. Jim briefly serves as co-manager alongside Michael, then returns to sales. In season nine he helps launch a sports marketing company in Philadelphia, which nearly breaks his marriage, and in the finale he and Pam move to Austin so he can rejoin it.

Behind the scenes and legacy

John Krasinski was a relatively unknown actor who had been close to quitting the business when he booked the role. Adam Scott and John Cho were among the other actors who auditioned for Jim, and Krasinski's chemistry with Jenna Fischer in paired chemistry reads helped win him the part. The character is named after a childhood friend of developer Greg Daniels.

Krasinski also stepped behind the camera, directing episodes including "Sabre," "Lotto," and "The Boat." Jim's quiet everyman charm made him a pop culture shorthand for the smart, underused office worker, and his romance with Pam is still a benchmark for will-they-won't-they storytelling.
