Holly Flax comes to Dunder Mifflin Scranton as the new HR representative and, against all odds, makes Michael Scott like someone from HR. Played by Amy Ryan, she is kind, playful, and every bit as silly as Michael, which is exactly why they fit.
On The Office, Holly Flax's story runs through Michael Scott (Husband), Toby Flenderson (HR predecessor), Jan Levinson (Michael's ex), Dwight Schrute (Coworker), and Kevin Malone (Coworker).
Who is Holly Flax?
Holly is the human resources representative who takes over when Toby Flenderson leaves for Costa Rica at the end of season four. Michael is ready to hate her on principle, since HR is his sworn enemy, but she wins him over almost immediately with a joke at Toby's expense.
What sets Holly apart from Michael's earlier girlfriends is that she does not just tolerate his goofiness; she joins in. She does voices, plays along with bits, and shares his love of corny jokes, while being far more emotionally steady than Michael ever is on his own.
Personality and comedy
Holly is sweet and easygoing, with a streak of the same oblivious earnestness that defines Michael. On her first day, Dwight convinces her that Kevin has an intellectual disability, and she believes it for months, treating him with exaggerated patience. That gullibility is played as innocent rather than mean, and it is one of her best running jokes.
Amy Ryan, who had just earned an Academy Award nomination for Gone Baby Gone, plays Holly with a lightness that makes her easy to root for. Her scenes with Steve Carell feel like two kids who have finally found someone on their wavelength, from improvised characters at a seminar to a Slumdog Millionaire spoof at the company picnic.
Key storylines
Holly and Michael start dating early in season five, after Jan senses their connection and forbids it, which only pushes Michael to ask Holly out. Their romance is cut short when corporate learns about it and transfers Holly to the Nashua branch. The distance proves too much, they break up, and Holly begins seeing a coworker named A.J.
Holly returns in season seven to cover for Toby during his jury duty. After A.J. fails to commit, she and Michael rekindle their relationship and move in together. When she decides to go home to Colorado to care for her aging parents, Michael proposes in an elaborate candlelit surprise in the office and leaves Scranton to start a new life with her.
Behind the scenes
Amy Ryan was a fan of The Office and let her agent know she wanted to be on it. Writer Paul Lieberstein, who knew her from earlier work, brought her in for what was planned as a single episode, and her chemistry with Carell turned Holly into a recurring and then starring role. She is credited as starring cast during her season seven run.
Holly's arc gave Michael Scott a happy ending. After seasons of disastrous dates and a painful relationship with Jan, he finally finds a partner who loves him as he is, and the final season confirms that the two are happily raising a family in Colorado.
