Pam Beesly from The Office: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Pam Beesly?

Pam is the receptionist at the Scranton branch, the first face anyone sees when they walk into Dunder Mifflin. When the series begins she has been with her fiance Roy, a warehouse worker, for years, and their wedding date keeps slipping. She does not dream of being a receptionist forever, but she is not sure how to change her life either.

What she does have is art. Pam draws and paints whenever she can, and the show slowly turns her talent from a private hobby into something she is brave enough to show the world.

Personality and comedy

Early Pam is reserved, with a dry sense of humor that mostly comes out in her reactions and in her conspiracies with Jim against Dwight. She is the audience's ally inside the office, the person who notices everything and quietly rolls her eyes. Her relationships with Michael, Dwight, and Angela soften and sharpen in turn, and Dwight in particular becomes an odd but loyal friend.

The big change comes in season three. After a disappointing art show, where Oscar's partner dismisses her work and Michael is the one coworker who truly loves it, buying her drawing of the office building, Pam promises to be more honest. At a company beach day she walks across hot coals and then tells everyone, Jim included, exactly how she feels.

Key storylines

Pam turns Jim down after his confession in "Casino Night," but she calls off her wedding to Roy soon after. A brief reunion with Roy ends when he trashes a bar after she admits that Jim kissed her. Jim asks her out at the end of season three, and the two are a couple from season four on. She spends part of season five at the Pratt Institute in New York, decides graphic design is not for her, and comes home.

She then joins Michael's tiny breakaway paper company as its first saleswoman, which earns her a sales job when Dunder Mifflin buys it out. Pam marries Jim at Niagara Falls, has their daughter Cece in "The Delivery" and son Phillip in season eight, and talks her way into a new role as office administrator in "Counseling." In the last season she paints a mural in the warehouse, survives a rough patch in her marriage, and in the finale agrees to move the family to Austin.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Jenna Fischer has said the casting director asked her to look normal, so she gave short, flat answers in her improvised audition, tried hard not to be funny, and invented Pam's original hairstyle. Kathryn Hahn also read for the role. Fischer kept detailed notes on Pam's backstory and changed her performance as the character grew more assertive, and she earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2007.

Pam's arc from the reception desk to a confident artist is one of the most loved journeys on the show. Since 2019 Fischer has revisited it with Angela Kinsey on their rewatch podcast, Office Ladies.
