Patrick Brewer meets David Rose across a counter while helping him apply for a business license, and he gently teases him from the start. Played by Noah Reid, he becomes David's business partner, his first truly steady relationship, and finally his husband.

Who is Patrick Brewer?

Patrick is the man behind the desk when David applies for a business license in season three. Intrigued by David's plan for a local goods store, he gets involved, writing grants and handling the practical side of the business while David curates the shelves. Their partnership becomes Rose Apothecary.

He is fairly new to the area and, as the show slowly reveals, new to understanding his own feelings. Patrick had been engaged to his high school sweetheart, Rachel, before coming to Schitt's Creek, and his relationship with David is the first time he has felt sure of what love is supposed to feel like.

Personality and comedy

Patrick is the practical, even-tempered counterweight to David's anxiety, a little like Johnny is to Moira. His humor is gentle and teasing, and he is one of the few people who can calm David down with a raised eyebrow. He is also competitive, as anyone who watches him play baseball or tackle an escape room learns.

He can be reluctant to say the hard things, and several of the couple's biggest bumps come from what Patrick leaves unsaid, from his past engagement to the fact that he has not yet come out to his parents. The show treats those moments with care and lets the couple work through them.

Key storylines

Patrick asks David to a birthday dinner that David does not realize is a date, and the night ends with their first kiss. In season four he serenades David with an acoustic cover of Tina Turner's "The Best" at the store's open mic night. The couple hits a rough patch when Rachel turns up in town, but Patrick works hard to win David back.

In season five Johnny accidentally reveals Patrick's relationship to his parents, and Patrick comes out to them at his surprise birthday party, where they respond with nothing but love. He proposes to David at the end of a hike later that season, and in the series finale the two marry at the town hall, with Moira officiating. Patrick also co-stars in the town's Cabaret.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Noah Reid joined the show in season three after Dan Levy, who knew him socially, invited him to audition. Reid had never watched Schitt's Creek before, did not know how long the character would last, and was cast without a chemistry read with Levy. Patrick became a main character for the rest of the series.

A New York Times critic named the open mic serenade one of the most romantic TV moments of 2018, and Reid's recording of the song topped the Canadian iTunes chart, with proceeds going to an LGBTQ youth charity. Critics praised the David and Patrick relationship as a joyful, homophobia-free love story. Reid is a singer-songwriter as well as an actor and has released his own albums.
