Who is Barbara Howard?

Barbara is one of Abbott's most senior teachers, a kindergarten teacher who has spent around two decades at the school. She is elegant, proper, and openly devoted to her Christian faith, and she believes in doing things the way that has always worked for her students.

She and her best friend Melissa are the school's veteran power duo. Barbara is often skeptical of Janine's grand plans, but she cares about the younger teacher deeply, and over time she becomes something like a mentor and a second mother to her.

Personality and comedy

Barbara's comedy comes from her unshakable dignity bumping into a very undignified school. She is suspicious of new technology, unimpressed by trends, and capable of shutting down a conversation with a single look. A running gag has her mixing up the names of celebrities, sometimes convinced that a white star is Black.

She also has hidden depths. Barbara refers to a looser side of herself, "Sea Barbara," that came out on a summer cruise and that viewers never actually see. And when the school is in real trouble, she is not above using her church connections to quietly pressure the right people.

Key storylines

In season one Barbara's pride gets her in trouble when a data-entry mix-up with a new reading app makes her kindergartners look like advanced readers and she will not admit she needs help, and she later secures extra money for the school by leaning on a school board member from her church. Her husband Gerald visits for lunch now and then, and her daughter Taylor briefly dates Gregory, leaving Barbara awkwardly caught in the middle.

Season two tests her in new ways: a fire she accidentally started with a candle, a health scare for Gerald, and a clash with Ava over a candy fundraiser. Late in season four Barbara becomes Abbott's permanent music teacher, and she prepares to become a grandmother when Taylor announces she is pregnant. The baby, a girl, arrives in season five.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Quinta Brunson has said Barbara is based on her own mother, a longtime Philadelphia teacher. Sheryl Lee Ralph plays the role, and the running celebrity mix-up gag was inspired by Ralph herself.

Ralph won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022 for the episode "New Tech," and she was nominated again in 2023, 2024, and 2025. That win made her the first member of the cast to take home an acting Emmy for the show.
