Gregory Eddie arrives at Abbott Elementary as a substitute who really wanted the principal's job, and he stays because of the kids and the teacher next door. Played by Tyler James Williams, he is the show's straight man, its master of the silent look to camera, and half of its central romance.

Who is Gregory Eddie?

Gregory moves to Philadelphia from Baltimore and starts at Abbott in the pilot, filling in for a first-grade teacher who was fired. He trained to become a principal and had applied for the top job at Abbott, only to lose out to Ava, a revelation that stings even more once he learns how she got it.

He soon commits to teaching for real, earning a full-time position at the end of season one. Gregory runs a tight, structured classroom, and he quickly becomes close with Janine, whose open-hearted energy is the opposite of his own.

Personality and comedy

Gregory is reserved, precise, and allergic to chaos, which makes Abbott the perfect place to torment him. Much of his comedy happens in reaction shots: a long, pained stare into the documentary camera while Ava says something outrageous or a coworker launches another wild plan.

He also has famously narrow tastes. The staff is horrified to learn he does not like pizza, and Quinta Brunson based his picky palate partly on one of the show's writers, Brian Rubenstein. A secret soft side shows up in other ways, like the school garden he quietly keeps alive using skills from his father's landscaping business.

Key storylines

Early on Gregory dates Barbara's daughter Taylor, until she ends things early in season two, and he later dates Amber, the mother of one of his own students. All the while his feelings for Janine are obvious to everyone except, for a long time, Janine. After a kiss at a teacher conference and a confession on a field trip, they decide to stay friends, and season four reveals they finally became a couple over the summer.

Gregory also grows as an educator. He is named Educator of the Year in season two, steps in as interim principal when Ava is fired in season four, and at the end of season five Ava promotes him to assistant principal. Along the way he slowly mends his relationship with his demanding father, Martin, and opens up about his late mother, Faith. By the season five finale he is quietly planning to propose to Janine.

Tyler James Williams plays Gregory and has been in the main cast since the pilot. He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a television series for the role at the 80th Golden Globe Awards.

Williams has also received Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2026. His slow-burn pairing with Janine is often compared to Jim and Pam from The Office, the mockumentary that Abbott's format most resembles.
