Who is Melissa Schemmenti?

Melissa is one of Abbott's veteran teachers, teaching second grade for most of the series. She comes from a large Italian-American Philadelphia family with ties to the local fire department and, the show strongly hints, to people who operate a little outside the law.

Those connections are useful. In the pilot, when the district fails to deliver rugs for the classrooms, Melissa makes a phone call and rugs simply appear. Her coworkers have learned not to ask too many questions as long as the school benefits.

Personality and comedy

Melissa is sarcastic, competitive, and quick to tease, especially when it comes to Janine's inexperience early on. She loves a good bet and hates losing. But she is also a deeply devoted teacher who goes to bat for her kids, and her friendship with Barbara is the bedrock of the teachers' lounge.

She has a softer side the show enjoys revealing. In season four she gets saddled with a classroom guinea pig, Sweet Cheeks, that she did not want, and becomes so attached that she even dresses up as the pet for Halloween.

Key storylines

Melissa is divorced, a status that strains her relationship with her traditional family. Midway through season one she starts dating Gary, the man who stocks the vending machines, and they stay together until season three, when he wants to propose and she makes clear she never wants to remarry. In season three she has a flirtation with Captain Robinson, the Philadelphia fire captain who keeps turning up at Abbott.

In season two a teacher shortage leaves her with a combined class of second and third graders, which leads to a disastrous aide named Ashley. The same season reveals her rivalry with her sister Kristen Marie, who works at Addington, a rival charter school. In season three she and Jacob become roommates and close friends, and in season five she moves up to teaching sixth grade.

Behind the scenes

Lisa Ann Walter plays Melissa and has been part of the main cast since the pilot. The character's South Philly attitude and family stories are a big part of the show's love letter to its Philadelphia setting.

Melissa's friendship with Barbara, two veteran teachers who have seen everything, gives the show some of its funniest and most heartfelt scenes, from their annual holiday dinner in the teachers' lounge to Melissa hosting her family's chaotic Christmas Eve.
