Who is Buster Bluth?

Buster is the baby of the Bluth family, a man around thirty who has spent years, and a great deal of company money, studying a scattered list of academic subjects without ever holding a real job. He lives with Lucille, who keeps him sheltered from the sun, the ocean, windy balconies, and most of adult life.

He is easily frightened and frequently overwhelmed, but he is also genuinely kind. He greets his siblings with "Hey, brother," hands out unrequested shoulder massages, and is often more loyal to the family than the others, refusing to sell his company stock when Michael asks everyone to hold on.

Personality and comedy

Tony Hale plays Buster as a bundle of nerves and childlike enthusiasm. Juice makes him hyper, cheese makes him cranky, he naps constantly, and he is afraid of everything from open spaces to birds. The narrator notes that he may actually be smarter than Gob or Lindsay, which somehow makes his helplessness even funnier.

His bond with Lucille is intense to the point of discomfort, complete with years as her partner at Motherboy, an annual mother and son dinner dance, and he tries to assert his independence by dating her rival, Lucille Austero. A later reveal that his biological father is actually George Sr.'s twin brother Oscar explains a few of his quirks, including that fondness for shoulder rubs.

Key storylines

In the season two premiere, Lucille enlists Buster in the U.S. Army on a whim, and his dread of being sent overseas becomes a running thread. That threat ends abruptly in "Out on a Limb," when he finally swims in the ocean in defiance of his mother and a loose seal bites off his left hand. For the rest of the run he wears a hook or a prosthetic hand, which the show turns into countless sight gags.

In the Netflix revival Buster reenlists, unknowingly flies combat drones while believing he is playing a video game, and comes home with an oversized robotic hand he cannot quite control. Season four ends with him arrested as a suspect in the disappearance of Lucille Austero, season five sends him on the run with Oscar, and the final episode ends with her body being found and Buster confessing to the family.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Tony Hale was cast from an audition tape and flown in to read for Fox, and he plays Buster in all five seasons. Buster's lost hand became one of the show's most famous running jokes, and fans love how carefully it was set up: the "loose seal" that takes it is a pun on his mother's name, one of many layered gags that reward a rewatch.

Entertainment Weekly once picked Buster as the uncle for its "Perfect TV Family," a sign of how fondly viewers took to him. His mix of fragility and sincerity made him a fan favorite from the original Fox run through the Netflix seasons.
