Tobias Funke is the Bluth family's most hopeful and least self-aware in-law, a disgraced psychiatrist determined to become a star. Played by David Cross, he is famous for his never-nude cutoffs, his blue body paint, and lines that mean far more than he realizes.

On Arrested Development, Tobias Funke's story runs through Lindsay Bluth Funke (Wife), Maeby Funke (Daughter), Michael Bluth (Brother-in-law), Lucille Bluth (Mother-in-law), George Michael Bluth (Nephew), and Gob Bluth (Brother-in-law).

Who is Tobias Funke?

Tobias is married to Lindsay Bluth and is the father of Maeby. He was once the chief resident of psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, until he lost his medical license for performing CPR on a man who was not actually having a heart attack. He was licensed as both an analyst and a therapist, and he proudly combines the two titles into one deeply unfortunate word.

Early in the series he decides his true destiny is acting, and he pursues it with total sincerity for the rest of the show. His wife mocks the dream, his in-laws barely tolerate him, and he barely notices either.

Personality and comedy

Tobias is the show's king of unintentional innuendo. He constantly says things that make the Bluths question his sexuality, and he never hears it. He also suffers from being a "never-nude," a condition that keeps him in denim cutoffs at all times.

His acting career is a string of humiliations: auditions he loses to his wife, a prison film role he cannot do because of the shower scene, and a stint covered in blue paint while trying to join the Blue Man Group, which he believes is a support group. David Cross plays all of it with wounded optimism, which is what makes Tobias so funny.

Key storylines

In season one a self-help book Tobias wrote years earlier, The Man Inside Me, suddenly finds an audience, though not the one he intended. In season two, after Lindsay throws him out, he sneaks back into the house disguised as a British nanny named Mrs. Featherbottom, a performance that fools nobody but gets the cleaning done.

The Netflix revival sends Tobias to India after a split from Lindsay, then back to California, where he mistakes a methadone clinic for an acting class and falls for a struggling actress named DeBrie Bardeaux. The pair try to make it as Fantastic Four-themed street performers, and a misunderstanding on a TV sting show leaves Tobias a registered sex offender, a running joke throughout the revival.

Behind the scenes and legacy

David Cross made Tobias one of Arrested Development's most beloved characters. The role became so iconic that a blue-painted Tobias look-alike, played by an uncredited extra, appears as one of the Collector's specimens in Avengers: Infinity War after Cross was unavailable to cameo.

Tobias's vanity license plate, meant to read "A New Start," is one of the show's most famous visual gags, and his blue paint and cutoff shorts remain popular fan costumes.
