Lucille Bluth is the glamorous, cutting, and endlessly scheming wife of George Bluth Sr. and the mother of Gob, Lindsay, Michael, and Buster. Played by Jessica Walter, she delivers many of the show's most quotable insults without ever raising her voice.
On Arrested Development, Lucille Bluth's story runs through George Bluth Sr. (Husband), Buster Bluth (Son), Michael Bluth (Son), Gob Bluth (Son), Lindsay Bluth Funke (Adopted Daughter), and Maeby Funke (Granddaughter).
Who is Lucille Bluth?
Lucille is the matriarch of the formerly wealthy Bluth family. In the pilot she is named head of the Bluth Company moments before her husband is arrested by the SEC, a job she has no real intention of doing. She keeps living the high life in her apartment at Balboa Towers, paying for spa days, face lifts, and a steady supply of drinks with company money.
She is the mother of Gob, Michael, and Buster, and the adoptive mother of Lindsay and, later, a young boy from Korea whom the family calls Annyong. She plays favorites openly, needles Lindsay about her looks, makes no secret of her low opinion of Gob, and keeps Buster so close that he can barely function without her.
Personality and comedy
Lucille is vain, manipulative, and gloriously unbothered. She lies to her children to keep them fighting with each other, fearing what might happen if they ever united against her, and she is famously rude to anyone who serves her. Jessica Walter plays even the cruelest lines with perfect, frosty composure, and the joke is often how little Lucille cares who she hurts.
Her relationship with Buster is one of the show's richest running gags, an overly intimate mother and son bond that includes years of partnering at Motherboy, an annual mother and son dinner dance. She also carries on a long rivalry with her neighbor and namesake Lucille Austero, a fellow socialite who dates first Buster and then Gob.
Key storylines
Over the original run, Lucille signs Buster up for the Army on a whim, carries on an affair with George Sr.'s identical twin brother Oscar, and lands in rehab, where she promptly challenges Kitty to a drinking contest. Through it all she keeps a firm grip on the family, at one point quietly wresting control of the company board away from Michael. The season three finale, "Development Arrested," reveals that she, not her husband, was the real mastermind behind the Bluth Company's crimes.
At the end of season three Lucille tries to escape the SEC by sea after Annyong turns over evidence against her, and the Netflix revival picks up with her arrest and trial. When none of her children show up to court, she is convicted and sent to a country club style women's prison, and the later seasons follow her scramble to protect Buster when he becomes a murder suspect.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Jessica Walter was cast from an audition tape and flown in to read for Fox. She won a 2004 Satellite Award for the role and received a 2005 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Kristen Wiig plays a younger Lucille in season four flashbacks.
Lucille became one of the most quoted characters on a very quotable show, and her withering one-liners and exaggerated wink live on as reaction GIFs. Walter, who died in 2021, played her in all five seasons, from the Fox original through the Netflix revival.
