Who is Frank Rossitano?

Frank is a writer on TGS with Tracy Jordan, and he spends most of his time in the writers' room trading insults, pulling pranks, and eating. He is of Sicilian descent, grew up largely in Queens, and still lives with his mother, Sylvia.

His father, a lawyer for the mob, went into witness protection, and Frank's fearful mother steered him away from law school and into comedy instead. Like Friedlander himself, Frank also does stand-up.

Personality and comedy

Frank is childish and gleefully gross, a collector of video games, comic books, and action figures who chases women he considers easy targets. He delivers nearly everything deadpan, he has a sharp feel for pop culture, and every so often he displays an intelligence that catches his coworkers off guard.

His hats are his signature: the joke phrase on his trucker cap changes from episode to episode, and fans made a game of reading every one. His home life is its own running gag. In "Verna" he even moves in with Liz for a while, and the two make a pact to quit their bad habits that neither of them can keep.

Key storylines

In "Goodbye, My Friend," Frank opens up to Jack about his father during a guys' night out, and Jack offers to pay for him to attend Columbia Law School, an offer that is later withdrawn. While Liz is busy preparing her own talk show, she names Frank acting head writer, and he slowly starts dressing and acting like her.

The great love of Frank's life is Lynn Onkman (Susan Sarandon), the former teacher he had a relationship with when he was her student. After she gets out of prison in season five they reunite, to the horror of everyone around them, and he even pretends to be Liz's boyfriend to keep the romance hidden from his mother.

Behind the scenes

Friedlander had never met Tina Fey before he auditioned. The character was based on at least two writers Fey had worked with at Saturday Night Live, and Friedlander has said he added plenty of his own touches.

Frank is one of the seven characters given star billing in 30 Rock's opening credits, and Friedlander was a series regular for all seven seasons.
