Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Jack Donaghy?

Jack is the executive sent to 30 Rock in the pilot to fix The Girlie Show. His first moves are to hire Tracy Jordan, rename the program TGS with Tracy Jordan, and tell head writer Liz Lemon exactly what kind of woman he thinks she is. He is a proud conservative and a corporate true believer whose greatest professional triumph is GE's Trivection oven.

Behind the tailored suits is a hard childhood. Jack grew up poor in the Boston area with a domineering mother, Colleen, started working at 12, and made his way through Princeton and Harvard Business School. His lifelong dream is to run General Electric.

Personality and comedy

Alec Baldwin plays Jack with total, deadpan authority, which makes his absurd pronouncements land even harder. He hands out backhanded compliments, has firm opinions on everything from business strategy to romance, and almost always addresses Liz simply as "Lemon." Tina Fey has said Lorne Michaels was an inspiration for the character, and Baldwin has said he drew on Michaels too.

The joke of Jack is that the cold-blooded executive keeps revealing a heart. He mentors Liz, takes Kenneth under his wing, and goes out of his way for the people around him while insisting he only cares about winning. Fey designed him as Liz's opposite and complement, and the push and pull between them drives the show.

Key storylines

Jack's career rides a roller coaster. He loses his shot at succeeding GE chairman Don Geiss, takes a miserable job in the Bush administration, and climbs back up from the mailroom. Then cable company Kabletown buys NBC, leaving him working for a business that makes nothing he respects, until he outmaneuvers Hank Hooper's granddaughter to take over the company himself.

His romantic life is just as eventful, with his ex-wife Bianca, a congresswoman named C.C., his mother's nurse Elisa, and his high school crush Nancy. He marries CNBC anchor Avery Jessup, although a wardrobe mix-up at the ceremony first leaves him legally married to Liz, and they have a daughter, Elizabeth, nicknamed Liddy, before the marriage falls apart. Along the way he discovers that his biological father is a Bennington College professor played by Alan Alda.

The ending and legacy

In the series finale, "Last Lunch," Jack quits Kabletown to search for happiness and finds it almost immediately in a new idea: a dishwasher with a clear door. The invention wins him his dream job, chairman of GE.

Jack is one of the defining roles of Baldwin's career. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards for playing him.
