Jeff Greene from Curb Your Enthusiasm: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Jeff Greene?

Jeff manages Larry's career, such as it is, and is his closest friend and confidant. He is married to the explosive Susie Greene, and the couple have a daughter, Sammi. When Larry has a new theory, a new grudge, or a new problem, Jeff is usually the first person he calls, and Jeff is usually the first person to make it worse.

The two men are partners in many of the show's schemes, from flimsy cover stories for Jeff's late-night phone calls to sneaking around behind their wives' backs. Their friendship survives everything, mostly because neither of them ever learns a lesson.

Personality and comedy

Jeff is genial, lazy, and morally flexible. He has frequent affairs and often recruits Larry to help cover them up, which means Larry takes the blame when the stories collapse. Jeff Garlin has described the character as a pretty evil guy with no morals or scruples, and much of the comedy comes from how cheerful Jeff stays while being exactly that.

His other great role is as Larry's amused witness, egging him on as Larry digs himself deeper, and his own fear of Susie gives the pair plenty to bond over.

Key storylines

Early on, Jeff and Susie separate and he moves into a hotel, and their on-again, off-again marriage becomes a running thread. In "The Doll," Jeff helps Larry steal a doll's head from Sammi's collection, and in "Mary, Joseph and Larry" a phone call Jeff makes to another woman leads to a cover story that gets him thrown out of the house.

Later, Jeff and Larry both test as kidney matches for Richard Lewis until Susie forbids Jeff to donate. In season eight, the two eat the frozen yogurt meant as the Greenes' dying dog's last meal and then lie about it. Through all of it, Jeff stays by Larry's side, and their friendship lasts the entire twelve-season run.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Jeff Garlin plays Jeff in all twelve seasons and is also one of the show's executive producers, and he directed an episode. Like the rest of the cast, he improvised his dialogue from Larry David's story outlines, which gives Jeff and Larry's scenes their natural, overlapping rhythm.

Garlin had a stroke in early 2000, shortly before filming began, and his speech is noticeably slurred in some early first-season episodes before it improves. Jeff's marriage to Susie, with its screaming matches and uneasy truces, became one of the show's longest-running threads and a funhouse mirror of Larry's own marriage to Cheryl.
