Larry David, as he appears on Curb Your Enthusiasm, has everything he could want except the ability to keep quiet. Played by the real Larry David, he spends twelve seasons enforcing his own private rules of etiquette and paying for it every single time.

On Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David's story runs through Cheryl David (Wife, later Ex-wife), Jeff Greene (Manager and Best Friend), Susie Greene (Nemesis), and Leon Black (Roommate).

Who is Larry David?

On Curb, Larry is a heightened version of his real self: the co-creator and main writer of Seinfeld, now living comfortably in Los Angeles on the money the show made him. He has an office but is rarely seen working. For the first half of the series he is married to Cheryl, and his closest confidant is his manager and friend Jeff Greene.

Larry is Jewish, though not observant, and he leans into or away from that identity whenever it suits him. His friends include Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Wanda Sykes, and Marty Funkhouser, and from season six on he shares his house with Leon Black.

Personality and comedy

The engine of every episode is Larry's inability to let anything go. He flouts social conventions he finds pointless, then lectures other people for breaking rules that only he seems to know. Tipping, hugging, apologizing, and the proper way to say thank you all become battlegrounds, and his complaints often spiral into misunderstandings that make him look far worse than he is.

The dialogue is largely improvised from Larry's story outlines, which gives the show its loose, cringe-filled rhythm. Yet Larry is rarely a villain. He is often simply honest when no one else will be, and the show takes real pleasure in the moments when his bluntness is cheered as a public service.

Key storylines

Many seasons follow a long arc. Mel Brooks casts Larry as the lead in a Broadway run of The Producers in season four. In season five, Larry comes to believe he was adopted, donates a kidney to Richard Lewis, and briefly dies and visits heaven. In season six, Cheryl leaves him after he fixates on the DVR during a terrifying call from a turbulent flight, and in season seven he stages a Seinfeld reunion partly as a scheme to win her back.

The divorce becomes final in season eight, and midway through that season Larry relocates to New York. Later arcs include a fatwa issued after he mocks the Ayatollah while promoting his new musical, a coffee shop he opens purely out of spite, and a trip to Atlanta that leads to the series finale, "No Lessons Learned," in which Larry stands trial in a deliberate echo of the Seinfeld finale.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Curb grew out of a 1999 HBO special and ran for twelve seasons from 2000 to 2024. Larry David received seven Emmy nominations for lead actor in a comedy and three Golden Globe nominations, and the show won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy series in 2003.

The series was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for 11 of its 12 seasons, and its loosely improvised style, built on David's story outlines rather than full scripts, became one of its trademarks. Many publications rank Curb among the greatest comedies of the 21st century.
