Susie Greene is the one person in Larry David's world who can out-yell him, and she does it often. Played by Susie Essman, she sees through every scheme her husband Jeff and his best friend cook up, and she lets them know it at full volume.
On Curb Your Enthusiasm, Susie Greene's story runs through Jeff Greene (Husband), Larry David (Nemesis), Cheryl David (Friend), and Leon Black.
Who is Susie Greene?
Susie is married to Jeff Greene, Larry's manager and best friend, and the couple have a daughter, Sammi. Their marriage is stormy and on-again, off-again, largely because of Jeff's cheating and Susie's constant criticism of him. She is also close to Larry's wife, Cheryl, which puts her in Larry's orbit far more than either of them would like.
Shrewd and permanently suspicious, Susie is usually the first to uncover what Jeff and Larry have been hiding. She often blames Larry for her marital problems, sometimes fairly and sometimes not, and treats him as Jeff's partner in crime.
Personality and comedy
Susie's scenes with Larry tend to start out pleasant and then detonate. Her furious, inventive, profanity-laced rants are some of the most quoted moments in the show, and Susie Essman, a stand-up comedian, improvises them with a precision that makes each one feel like an event.
For all her own volume, Susie is the show's unlikely moral watchdog. She takes marriage vows and family loyalty seriously, and she holds both her husband and his best friend to standards neither of them has any intention of meeting.
Key storylines
Susie catches Jeff and Larry in many of their schemes, from the doll's head they steal from Sammi's collection to the phone-call cover story that leads her to throw Jeff out of the house. She refuses to let Jeff give Richard Lewis a kidney, and she is livid when Larry repeats a crude phrase in a children's game of telephone at Ben Stiller's birthday party.
In season seven, Larry diagnoses Susie's Lyme disease and then complains that she is not grateful enough. In season eight, the Greenes' dog Oscar has to be put down, and Susie's request for one last frozen yogurt goes badly wrong when Larry and Jeff eat it. Her daughter Sammi's wedding arrives in the season nine finale.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Susie Essman, a stand-up comedian from the Bronx, appears as Susie in several first-season episodes without a guest credit, receives guest billing from season two, and is promoted to the main cast starting in season eight, remaining through the 2024 finale.
That steady climb reflects how central Susie became to the show's comedy. Essman has said that by the third season, strangers were stopping her on the street to beg her to repeat Susie's favorite insult for Jeff, and her clashes with Larry rank among the series' most memorable scenes.
