Nate Shelley begins Ted Lasso picking up dirty kit and getting pushed around by the players, until Ted notices that he has a brilliant mind for the game. Played by Nick Mohammed, he has one of the show's biggest and most talked-about arcs, from underdog to villain to redemption.
On Ted Lasso, Nate Shelley's story runs through Ted Lasso (Mentor), Coach Beard (Fellow Coach), Roy Kent (Fellow Coach), Keeley Jones (Friend), and Rebecca Welton (Boss).
Who is Nate Shelley?
Nate is Richmond's equipment manager, or kit man, when Ted arrives. The players mostly ignore or tease him, but Ted makes a point of learning his name and listening to his ideas. When Nate's suggested plays work, Ted happily gives him the credit in front of the press.
By the end of season one Nate has given the team a stirring pre-match speech and been promoted to assistant coach. In season two his bold substitutions win a big FA Cup match, and the media nicknames him the "Wonder Kid."
Personality and comedy
Early Nate is a bundle of nerves: soft-spoken, apologetic, and convinced nobody notices him. A lot of his comedy comes from small acts of courage, like the episode where Rebecca and Keeley coach him to stand up for himself so he can book a good table for his parents' anniversary.
That insecurity has a darker side. Nate craves approval, especially from a stern father who never seems impressed, and once the spotlight finds him he starts lashing out at players and at Will, the new kit man. The show uses him to explore what happens when someone who was overlooked finally gets attention and does not know what to do with it.
Key storylines
Late in season two Nate feels that Ted has stopped noticing him. He becomes the anonymous source for a story about Ted's panic attack, impulsively kisses Keeley, and, after Richmond wins promotion, tears down Ted's famous "Believe" sign. The season ends with Nate as the new head coach of West Ham under Rebecca's ex-husband, Rupert.
Season three slowly brings him back. Nate falls for Jade, a hostess at his favorite Greek restaurant, grows uneasy with Rupert, quits West Ham, and leaves an apology note in the locker room for Will, the kit man he once bullied. He returns to the club as an assistant kit man and finally apologizes to Ted in the season three finale. By season four he has moved on to coach Poland's national team, married Jade, and become a father, and he drops by Richmond as a guest.
Behind the scenes
Nick Mohammed plays Nate. He earned Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022, and critics singled out his performance among the show's praised cast.
Nate was a series regular for the first three seasons and appears as a guest in season four, returning for the season finale.
