Ted Lasso is a folksy Kansas football coach who takes a job managing AFC Richmond, a struggling English Premier League club, without understanding the game. Played by Jason Sudeikis, he relies on optimism, curiosity, and homemade shortbread to win over a skeptical team, press, and city.
On Ted Lasso, Ted Lasso's story runs through Rebecca Welton (Boss), Coach Beard (Assistant Coach), Roy Kent (Captain, then Coach), Nate Shelley (Protege), Keeley Jones (Friend), and Jamie Tartt (Player).
Who is Ted Lasso?
Ted is a small-college American football coach who has just won a Division II title when Rebecca Welton, the new owner of AFC Richmond, hires him to run her soccer club in London. He arrives with his longtime assistant, Coach Beard, and an unshakable belief that his job is to help people become the best versions of themselves, whatever the scoreboard says.
What Ted does not know is that Rebecca hired him to fail, as revenge against her ex-husband, who loved the club more than anything. Ted also arrives carrying private pain: his marriage to Michelle is ending, and he misses his young son, Henry, back home.
Personality and comedy
Ted's humor is all warmth: rapid-fire pop culture references, folksy sayings, and puns delivered to people who are trying very hard not to like him. He bakes biscuits for his boss every morning, puts up a simple "Believe" sign at the club, and treats every player, reporter, and kit man as worth getting to know.
The show makes clear that the cheer is not the whole story. Ted has panic attacks, deflects with jokes, and resists therapy for a long time. His father died by suicide when Ted was sixteen, and the series gradually explores how that loss shaped the relentlessly upbeat man everyone sees.
Key storylines
In season one Ted slowly wins over the team, forgives Rebecca when she confesses her plan to sabotage him, and finalizes his divorce. Richmond is relegated on the last day of the season. In season two the club fights its way back to the Premier League while Ted starts seeing the team psychologist, Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, after a panic attack forces him off the field during a match. His protege Nate turns on him, leaks the story to the press, and leaves for a rival club.
Season three brings a new tactical system inspired by Total Football and a second-place finish in the Premier League, and Ted then resigns to go home to Kansas and be near Henry. Season four, which premiered in 2026, finds him back in Kansas until Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins recruit him to coach Richmond's new women's team, and his whole family moves to London. By that season's finale, he steps back to become the team's assistant so he can spend more time with his son.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Ted began in short NBC Sports promos for its Premier League coverage, where Sudeikis played a much ruder, more clueless version of the coach. Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, had dreamed up the idea years earlier while performing improv together in Amsterdam. For the series, they rebuilt Ted around curiosity and kindness, drawing on real coaches Sudeikis admired.
The show became one of Apple TV+'s first breakout hits, and its message of kindness landed with audiences during the pandemic summer of 2020. Sudeikis won back-to-back Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, along with two Golden Globes, and the cast was invited to the White House in 2023 to talk about mental health.
