Stanley Hudson is the unflappable senior salesman at Dunder Mifflin Scranton, and he is not interested in Michael's meetings, games, or feelings. Played by Leslie David Baker, he answers most of Michael's schemes with a withering look, saving his rare explosions for when he is truly pushed.
On The Office, Stanley Hudson's story runs through Phyllis Vance (Desk Mate), Michael Scott (Boss), Dwight Schrute (Coworker), Jim Halpert (Coworker), and Pam Beesly.
Who is Stanley Hudson?
Stanley is a long-serving salesman at the Scranton branch who shares a desk cluster with Phyllis. He is a capable veteran who does his job without fuss, and he still finds plenty of time for crossword puzzles. He has a wife, Teri, a daughter, Melissa, from an earlier marriage, and one clear goal in life: retirement.
Stanley has little patience for Michael, who keeps making awkward comments about race and wasting the afternoon with pointless meetings. He rarely says so out loud. Instead he sits, sighs, and keeps working on his puzzle.
Personality and comedy
Stanley's comedy is about restraint. Most of the time he barely reacts, so the moments when he does are huge. When Michael keeps pestering him during a meeting in "Did I Stutter?", Stanley finally snaps, and his outburst became one of the show's most famous lines. He is also capable of pure joy, mostly on Pretzel Day, when the free pretzel stand comes to the lobby.
Running gags round him out: he keeps giving toasters as wedding gifts, and he turns into a breezy, sunny "Florida Stanley" on a work trip to Tallahassee. The one coworker he reliably enjoys is Phyllis, his longtime desk mate and frequent lunch companion.
Key storylines
In "Branch Wars," Karen tries to lure Stanley to her Utica branch with a raise. He announces he is staying, then admits to the camera that he never meant to leave and was only negotiating for more money. In season five, a fire drill staged by Dwight in "Stress Relief" leaves Stanley with a heart attack, and he returns under doctor's orders to avoid stress, which mostly means avoiding Michael. Season six opens with Michael spreading word of Stanley's affair with a nurse named Cynthia, then accidentally calling Stanley's wife Teri by the other woman's name, which tips her off.
Later Stanley talks his way onto Dwight's special project team in Florida, and in "Stairmageddon" he refuses to climb back down the stairs for a sales call until Dwight resorts to tranquilizer darts. In the finale Stanley is happily retired in Florida, carving wooden birds, and he comes back for Dwight and Angela's wedding.
Behind the scenes
Leslie David Baker plays Stanley in every season of the show. Stanley was created for the American series and has no direct counterpart in the British original, though he takes on a few lines from that version's office in the pilot.
In 2020 Baker launched a crowdfunding campaign to make a pilot for a spin-off called Uncle Stan, in which a retired Stanley moves to Los Angeles to help his widowed nephew run a struggling business. Stanley's "Did I stutter?" remains one of the most quoted lines from the show.
