Who is Amy Farrah Fowler?

Amy is a neurobiologist from Glendale, California, who studies addiction in animals, with a habit of describing her experiments in alarming detail. She enters the series at the end of season three, when Howard and Raj create a dating profile for Sheldon and the site matches him with her. Their first meeting is less a date than a meeting of two very similar minds, and they quickly become close friends.

At first, Amy shares Sheldon's discomfort with romance and physical contact. Once she befriends Penny and Bernadette, though, she discovers how much she wants friendship, fun, and eventually love, and she becomes far more openly affectionate than Sheldon ever expected.

Personality and comedy

Amy's comedy blends dry, clinical delivery with a hidden romantic streak. She speaks bluntly about everything, including her own feelings, and she frequently declares Penny her best friend long before Penny agrees. Her excitement over small social milestones, like a sleepover or a girls' night, is both funny and touching.

She is also Sheldon's match intellectually and his best check on bad behavior. Amy is one of the few characters who can out-argue him, and much of their relationship's humor comes from watching two analytical people negotiate feelings through rules, contracts, and experiments.

Key storylines

In season five, a jealous Sheldon interrupts Amy's date with Stuart and asks her to be his girlfriend, sealing it with a lengthy relationship agreement. Their romance moves slowly, but it moves: a first real kiss, an anniversary dinner, and eventually a pause at the end of season eight, when Amy asks for time to think without knowing Sheldon has a ring. They break up for real in the season nine premiere, reunite later that season, and on Amy's birthday spend their first night together.

They move in together in season ten, and after Sheldon flies across the country to propose, they marry in the season eleven finale, "The Bow Tie Asymmetry." A comment at the wedding sparks their theory of super-asymmetry, and in the final season they win the Nobel Prize in Physics. In her acceptance speech, Amy encourages girls everywhere to pursue science.

Behind the scenes

Mayim Bialik, best known as a child star on Blossom, joined as a guest at the end of season three and was promoted to the main cast from season four through the end of the series. Like Amy, Bialik has a real PhD in neuroscience, which helped her bring credibility to Amy's lab talk.

Bialik received four consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the role. Amy's arc, from a near clone of Sheldon to a confident scientist and partner, is a big reason the show's later seasons feel so different from its early ones.
