Leonard Hofstadter is a Caltech experimental physicist, Sheldon's long-suffering roommate, and the hopeful romantic who falls for his new neighbor Penny in the first episode. Played by Johnny Galecki, he is the show's most relatable everyman, a genius who still feels like an underdog.

Who is Leonard Hofstadter?
Leonard is an experimental physicist at Caltech who earned his PhD at 24 and loves comic books, video games, and Dungeons and Dragons. He shares a Pasadena apartment with Sheldon Cooper and puts up with Sheldon's rules, rituals, and roommate agreement more patiently than anyone else could. The moment Penny moves in across the hall, Leonard is smitten.
He grew up in New Jersey as the overlooked child of a demanding, emotionally distant mother, the psychiatrist and neuroscientist Beverly Hofstadter, played by Christine Baranski. Her approval is something Leonard chases for most of the series, and her visits are reliably awkward.
Personality and comedy
Leonard is the straight man of the group, the one who reacts to Sheldon's eccentricities the way the audience would. He is kind, a little insecure, and prone to overthinking his relationship with Penny, which gives the show many of its sweetest and most cringeworthy moments.
He also has his own quirks. He is lactose intolerant, wears thick glasses, and gets competitive with his friends about everything from science to Halo. The joke is often that Leonard, for all his intelligence, is just as nervous and awkward around women as the others, he simply keeps trying.
Key storylines
Leonard and Penny's relationship is the backbone of the series. Their first date comes at the end of season one, they officially become a couple in season three, and they break up after Penny cannot say "I love you" back. They reunite in season five and slowly build a more grown-up relationship, including a summer apart when Leonard joins a research expedition backed by Stephen Hawking on a ship in the North Sea.
In season seven, after Penny is fired from a terrible movie, she proposes and Leonard accepts. The two elope in Las Vegas at the start of season nine, livestreaming the ceremony to their friends. They hold a second ceremony for their families at the start of season ten. By the series finale, Penny, who once told Leonard she was not sure she ever wanted kids, is expecting their first child.

Johnny Galecki, already familiar to TV audiences as David on Roseanne, played Leonard for all 12 seasons and received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the role in 2011. Leonard's name honors the television producer Sheldon Leonard and the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Robert Hofstadter.
Leonard and Penny's will-they-won't-they romance gave The Big Bang Theory a classic sitcom couple at its center, and their wedding and pregnancy storylines were key to the show's finale.
