Who is Bernadette Rostenkowski?

Bernadette is introduced in season three as Penny's coworker at The Cheesecake Factory, waiting tables to pay for graduate school in microbiology. Penny sets her up on a blind date with Howard, and at first the two seem to have nothing in common. They finally connect over a shared subject: their difficult, overbearing mothers.

She earns her PhD and takes a well-paid job at a pharmaceutical company, which makes her the top earner of the group. Bernadette grew up in a Polish Catholic family, and she brings a no-nonsense toughness to the friend group that nobody else has.

Personality and comedy

Bernadette's comedy comes from contrast. She looks and sounds adorable, then says something cutting or casually admits to a wildly unethical work practice. Her lab is a running gag for handling dangerous specimens, and she is one of the few people who can make Sheldon behave just by changing her tone.

Over the years she becomes more and more like Howard's mother, a joke the show leans into when she starts using the same piercing yell. She is also deeply competitive, whether at work or at game night, and she has a soft maternal side that comes out with her friends and later her kids.

Key storylines

Howard proposes to Bernadette in season four, and the two marry in a quick ceremony on the roof of Leonard and Sheldon's building at the end of season five, just before Howard leaves for the International Space Station. Their early marriage deals with Howard's attachment to his mother, money tensions over Bernadette's bigger paycheck, and Stuart moving in with them.

In season eight, Bernadette helps Penny land a job as a sales rep at her pharmaceutical company. She and Howard become parents in season ten with the birth of their daughter, Halley, followed in season eleven by a son, Neil Michael. Much of her later storyline centers on balancing her career and motherhood while still being the friend group's toughest negotiator.

Behind the scenes

Melissa Rauch joined as a recurring guest in season three and became a main cast member from season four through the end of the series. In 2017 the original five stars took a pay cut so that Rauch and Mayim Bialik could earn more, a widely reported gesture of support from the cast.

Bernadette is also a rare case of a blind date who became a lead: she starts as Penny's blind-date setup for Howard and ends the series as one of the show's central couples. Her son's name is its own little joke, since Neil Michael is named for Neil Armstrong, Neil Gaiman, and Neil Diamond, with a middle name for Bernadette's father, and the family ends up calling him Michael.
