Penny is a small-town Nebraska girl chasing an acting career in Los Angeles while waiting tables at The Cheesecake Factory. Played by Kaley Cuoco, she moves in across the hall from two physicists in the pilot and becomes their translator to the outside world.

On The Big Bang Theory, Penny's story runs through Leonard Hofstadter (Husband), Sheldon Cooper (Neighbor), Bernadette Rostenkowski (Best Friend), Amy Farrah Fowler (Best Friend), Raj Koothrappali (Friend), and Howard Wolowitz (Friend).

Who is Penny?

Penny grew up outside Omaha, Nebraska, and moved to Southern California to become an actress. When the series begins she has just broken up with her boyfriend, moved into the apartment across from Leonard and Sheldon, and is working as a waitress and sometimes bartender at The Cheesecake Factory. She asks to borrow their shower on day one, and a friendship begins.

Famously, the show never reveals Penny's maiden name. Producers said early on that it would come out eventually, then later decided to keep it a secret for good. After she marries Leonard she goes by Penny Hofstadter, and fans still trade theories about the few early clues the show dropped.

Personality and comedy

Penny is the outsider who grounds the show. She is warm, socially confident, and quick with a comeback, and she rarely understands what the guys are talking about, which gives the writers an easy way to explain science jokes to the audience. Her relationship with Sheldon is a highlight: she is one of the few people who can manage him, whether that means singing "Soft Kitty" when he is sick or calling out his rudeness.

She has her own flaws, too. Penny mooches the guys' food and Wi-Fi, can put away an impressive amount of wine, and spends years insisting her big acting break is just around the corner. Over time she becomes close friends with Amy and Bernadette, and the three of them form a group of their own.

Key storylines

Penny and Leonard have their first date at the end of season one, get together in season three, break up, and reunite in season five. Her acting career mostly consists of failed auditions, a hemorrhoid cream commercial, and a role in a low-budget horror film called Serial Ape-ist. In season seven, after she is fired from the sequel, she realizes what she really wants and proposes to Leonard.

At the start of season eight, Bernadette gets Penny an interview at her pharmaceutical company, and Penny lands a job as a sales rep, where she turns out to be a natural. She and Leonard elope in Las Vegas at the start of season nine. In the series finale, Penny reveals that she is pregnant with their first child.

Behind the scenes

Penny was not in the show's original, unaired pilot. That version featured a tougher female lead named Katie, played by Amanda Walsh, and the character was reworked into Penny when the series was retooled. Kaley Cuoco, already known from 8 Simple Rules, played Penny for all 12 seasons.

Penny's journey from struggling actress to successful saleswoman and wife gave the show one of its clearest growth arcs. When Penny's mother finally appears in season ten, she is played by Katey Sagal, who had played Cuoco's mother on 8 Simple Rules years earlier.
