Who is Amy Sosa?

Amy is a floor supervisor at Cloud 9, a big-box store on Ozark Highlands Road in St. Louis. She got pregnant with her daughter Emma in high school, married the father, Adam Dubanowski, and went to work at the store instead of college. When the show begins she has been there about ten years, is good at her job, and is quietly convinced her life has stalled.

She refuses to let strangers use her real name, so she wears a different fake name tag almost every episode, a running gag that lasts all six seasons. The arrival of Jonah, a business school dropout who thinks there is beauty to be found in a megastore, shakes up her routine and slowly her whole life.

Personality and comedy

Amy is the show's straight woman and its sharpest wit. She is practical, impatient with nonsense, and quick with a sarcastic aside, whether she is managing Glenn's well-meaning chaos, Dina's intensity, or Jonah's idealism. Ferrera plays her as someone smart enough to see every problem coming and tired enough to let some of them happen.

She is also a working mom with real money worries, and the show takes those seriously. Amy's fights over pay, health insurance, and maternity leave give Superstore its satirical edge, and her bond with Dina, who considers her a best friend whether Amy likes it or not, is one of its warmest threads.

Key storylines

Amy's marriage to Adam slowly falls apart, and after the season two finale she tells Jonah she is divorcing him. Her will-they-won't-they with Jonah peaks when they kiss while trapped together during the tornado that destroys the store in the season two finale. They eventually start dating, and in season four, during a hectic delivery day, Amy gives birth to her son Parker.

When Glenn steps down, Amy becomes store manager and is stunned by the jump in salary, then finds herself caught between corporate and her coworkers during a unionization fight. In season six she takes a corporate job in California and leaves the store, but she returns for the final episodes, and the finale's flash-forward shows her and Jonah married with a child of their own.

Behind the scenes and legacy

America Ferrera was cast as Amy in March 2015 and also served as a producer on the show. She announced in early 2020 that she would leave after season five, but the pandemic cut that season short, so Amy's exit was moved into season six to give her story a proper ending.

Ferrera won a 2017 Gracie Award for Actress in a Leading Role in a comedy for the part. Amy is a rare sitcom lead: a Latina working mom in a low-wage retail job, through whom Superstore told stories about labor and class with a light touch.
