Dina Fox has worked at Cloud 9 for more than a decade and treats store policy like military law. Played by Lauren Ash, she is Superstore's most intimidating employee and one of its biggest scene stealers.
On Superstore, Dina Fox's story runs through Garrett McNeil (Boyfriend), Amy Sosa (Best Friend), Glenn Sturgis (Boss), Jonah Simms (Former crush), and Mateo Liwanag (Coworker).
Who is Dina Fox?
Dina is the assistant manager of Cloud 9 store 1217 in St. Louis. She loves rules, security footage, and catching shoplifters, and she takes store policy far more seriously than her easygoing boss Glenn does. In the pilot she interviews and hires Jonah, to whom she is instantly attracted.
Away from the store, Dina lives with a large flock of pet birds she calls her babies, and she is a strict vegan. She presents herself as tough and unsentimental, but over the series she becomes fiercely loyal to her coworkers, especially Amy, whom she declares her best friend.
Personality and comedy
Dina's comedy comes from total commitment. She speaks in blunt, oddly specific threats, treats petty shoplifting like a major investigation, and approaches every store contest, from Color Wars to a corporate steps challenge, as a battle to be won. Lauren Ash plays her completely straight, which makes her strangest lines even funnier.
The show slowly reveals the person underneath. Dina is lonely, awkward about affection, and surprisingly generous, and she shows up for people when it counts, whether that means carrying a baby for Glenn or plotting to break Mateo out of immigration detention.
Key storylines
Season one is dominated by Dina's crush on Jonah, which ends with her stepping down as assistant manager to pursue him, only to take the job back when she is the one employee who does not walk out after Glenn is fired. In season two she starts a secret relationship with Garrett, and the two spend the rest of the series in an on-again, off-again romance.
In season three Dina agrees to be the surrogate for Glenn and his wife Jerusha, and in season four she gives birth to their daughter on the same day Amy has her son. Later she dates a man named Brian before breaking it off. In the finale she becomes manager of the new online fulfillment center, and the flash-forward shows her back together with Garrett.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Lauren Ash was the first regular announced for Superstore, cast in February 2015 as Dina, the store's assistant manager. She stayed with the show through all six seasons.
Dina's deadpan intensity made her a fan favorite, and her friendship with Amy and slow-burning romance with Garrett gave the show two of its most unexpectedly sweet relationships.
