Garrett McNeil works customer service at Cloud 9 and runs the store's PA system, where his deadpan announcements double as running commentary on everything going wrong. Played by Colton Dunn, he is Superstore's resident skeptic and its best one-liner machine.
On Superstore, Garrett McNeil's story runs through Dina Fox (Girlfriend), Jonah Simms (Best Friend and roommate), Amy Sosa (Coworker), Glenn Sturgis (Boss), and Mateo Liwanag (Coworker).
Who is Garrett McNeil?
Garrett is a sales associate at Cloud 9 store 1217 in St. Louis who mostly works customer service and serves as the in-store announcer. He uses a wheelchair, and he has zero patience for anyone, including corporate, who wants to make him a symbol of something. From the pilot on, he is the coworker most likely to give new hire Jonah an honest read on how the store really works.
He is openly unambitious. Garrett does about as much work as he needs to avoid getting fired and views store events with amused detachment. That attitude makes him the ideal observer of the store's madness, and the person most likely to tell everyone the truth.
Personality and comedy
Garrett's comedy is all understatement. His PA announcements slip sarcastic commentary into routine messages, and his reactions to coworkers' schemes are usually a flat stare and a perfectly timed line. Colton Dunn's relaxed delivery makes him the calm center of a very loud ensemble.
He is also a loyal friend underneath the cynicism. His bond with Jonah grows into a real best friendship, especially after Jonah moves into his apartment, and his complicated, funny relationship with Dina reveals a softer side he would never admit to having.
Key storylines
In season two Garrett and Dina begin a secret relationship that turns into the show's longest-running on-again, off-again romance. After the tornado destroys Jonah's house, Jonah becomes Garrett's roommate, and their domestic fights become a running joke. At the end of season three, Garrett's hidden camera at a corporate town hall accidentally broadcasts Amy and Jonah to every Cloud 9 store.
In the final season Garrett leads the employees in confronting racism at the store after Cloud 9 changes its policy on locking up Black hair care products. He and Dina keep circling each other, and the series finale closes on Garrett reflecting on what the store and his friends meant to him while a flash-forward shows the two of them together.
Behind the scenes and legacy
Colton Dunn was announced as part of the cast in March 2015, with Garrett described as the store's sarcastic peanut gallery. He stayed with the show for all six seasons.
His PA announcements became one of Superstore's signature devices, a way to sum up the store's latest disaster in a single dry line.
