Cheyenne Thompson from Superstore: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Cheyenne Thompson?

Cheyenne works as a sales associate at the Cloud 9 superstore in St. Louis while she is still in high school. In the pilot her boyfriend Bo stages a ridiculous public proposal in the store, and before the first season ends she has her daughter, Harmonica, right there on the job. Born Cheyenne Lee, she marries Bo Thompson in season two.

She looks up to Amy, whom she treats as a wise older sister, and she is inseparable from Mateo, her best friend and fellow gossip. Cheyenne is not always paying attention, but she cares about her coworkers and almost never holds a grudge.

Personality and comedy

Much of Cheyenne's comedy comes from her offhand delivery of completely unhinged information about her life, her side hustles, and her family, all shared as if it were perfectly normal. She giggles when she is nervous, makes questionable plans with total confidence, and treats break room drama as the best part of the job.

The show steadily reveals that she is smarter than she lets on. When Dina assumes she will be a pushover, Cheyenne turns out to have genuinely good ideas, and once she is in charge she finds odd but effective ways to get people to work. Nichole Sakura keeps her gentle and funny without ever making her the butt of the joke.

Key storylines

Cheyenne's pregnancy drives her first season. She briefly considers putting the baby up for adoption, Bo panics and flees during the Wedding Day Sale, and then she gives birth in the store in the season one finale. Because Cloud 9 has no paid maternity leave, Glenn suspends her with pay so she can stay home, which gets him fired and sparks the staff walkout that carries into season two.

After a rough patch in which she briefly rekindles things with a former high school teacher, Cheyenne marries Bo near the end of season two, with Dina awkwardly inviting herself to be a bridesmaid. In later seasons Cheyenne helps Mateo search for a way to become legal, attends Cloud 9 Academy alongside Amy, celebrates her 21st birthday, and keeps up her side schemes with Mateo, including a pyramid scheme she ropes him into.

Floor supervisor and legacy

In season six, after Amy leaves and Glenn returns as store manager, the staff votes on a new floor supervisor. Dina backs Cheyenne because she assumes she will be easy to control, but Cheyenne wins the election and proves she has her own ideas. The finale's flash-forward shows her working with Mateo at Glenn's revived family business.

Cheyenne and Bo were popular enough that NBC developed a spin-off called Bo & Cheyenne in late 2020, though the network chose not to move forward with it. Sakura was credited under the stage name Nichole Bloom for most of the run and switched to her birth name for the final season.
