Jonah Simms shows up for his first shift at Cloud 9 and immediately knocks over a display, reprices the electronics to a quarter, and annoys the floor supervisor. Played by Ben Feldman, he is Superstore's well-meaning, occasionally insufferable idealist.

Who is Jonah Simms?

Jonah is a new sales associate at Cloud 9 store 1217 in St. Louis. He comes from an upper middle class family, dropped out of business school, and is a little embarrassed to be working retail, a fact he hides from his relatives. Dina, who is instantly attracted to him, hires him in the pilot, and he starts the same day as Mateo.

Where most of his coworkers see a dead-end job, Jonah sees a community worth improving. He organizes, petitions, and speechifies, sometimes to real effect and sometimes just to the annoyance of everyone around him, and his crush on Amy is obvious to the whole store long before either of them admits it.

Personality and comedy

Jonah is kind, optimistic, and a bit of a know-it-all. He loves a cause, and the show gets a lot of comedy from watching him lecture coworkers who have been doing the job for years about how it could be better. Ben Feldman plays him with a nervous, puppyish energy that keeps him likable even when he is being self-righteous.

His best friendship is with Garrett, whose deadpan sarcasm is the perfect counterweight to Jonah's earnestness. After the season two tornado destroys Jonah's home, he moves in with Garrett, and their roommate squabbles become a running bit.

Key storylines

Jonah and Amy team up early, leading a strike after Glenn is fired. Their slow-burn romance survives Amy's marriage, Jonah's other relationships, a kiss during the tornado, and a very public moment caught on a livestream at a corporate town hall. They finally start dating in season four.

Jonah's activism grows into a full unionization drive, which puts him at odds with Amy once she becomes store manager, and he helps negotiate a labor contract with corporate in season five. When Amy moves to California the couple splits up, but the series finale reunites them, and the flash-forward shows Jonah married to Amy, raising a child, and running for city council.

Ben Feldman was announced as the male lead in March 2015, a few days before America Ferrera joined as Amy. He stayed with the show for all six seasons, through the 2021 finale.

Jonah and Amy's slow-burn romance gave the show its long-running love story, and Jonah's habit of turning shop floor problems into moral debates helped give Superstore its sharp, socially aware voice.
