Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Eleanor Shellstrop?

Eleanor is a woman from Phoenix, Arizona, who dies in a ridiculous parking lot accident involving a runaway line of shopping carts and a truck. She wakes up in the Good Place, where the friendly architect Michael praises her for a life of selfless legal work. The trouble is that he is describing a different Eleanor Shellstrop. The real Eleanor sold worthless supplements to sick and elderly people and cared about almost no one.

Rather than confess, she turns to her assigned soulmate, the ethics professor Chidi, and asks him to teach her how to be good. What starts as a scheme to avoid getting caught slowly becomes a genuine effort to change, and Eleanor's growth is the spine of the whole series.

Personality and comedy

Eleanor is crude, impatient, and allergic to anything earnest, which makes her a hilarious fit for a heaven full of cheerful neighbors and polite parties. In the Good Place her curse words come out as harmless substitutes, so she spends a lot of time furiously saying "fork." She mocks Tahani, bluffs her way through ethics lessons, and usually has a selfish plan in progress.

What makes her more than a jerk is that she is sharp. Eleanor reads people well and is often the first to figure out what is really going on, a skill that turns her from the group's problem into its leader. Kristen Bell plays both sides, the snark and the slow-dawning decency, without ever losing the character's edge.

Key storylines

The first season ends with Eleanor working out the show's biggest twist: the Good Place is actually a cleverly disguised Bad Place, and she, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason were chosen to torture one another. Michael wipes their memories and restarts the experiment, but Eleanor keeps seeing through it, hundreds of times over, and eventually the humans and Michael team up to escape.

Later seasons send her back to Earth, where she confronts her neglectful mother Donna and builds a real life with her friends, and then into a new afterlife experiment that she has to run herself. Her romance with Chidi deepens across reboots and memory wipes, and in the finale, after helping redesign the afterlife, Eleanor chooses when she is ready to leave the Good Place for good.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Kristen Bell and Ted Danson were announced as the stars in January 2016, and Bell has said she knew the first season's twist when she signed on. Creator Michael Schur built the show around her character's journey, using real moral philosophy as the engine for a network comedy.

Bell earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for the role and won a People's Choice Award in 2019. Eleanor helped make The Good Place one of the most acclaimed comedies of its time, and its episodes won multiple Hugo Awards.
