Michael from The Good Place: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Michael?

Michael is an immortal being who builds and runs the afterlife neighborhood where Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason wake up. He introduces himself as a Good Place architect on his first big project, nervous about getting everything right and endlessly curious about humans. He loves the mundane details of human life and asks earnest questions about them.

The first season finale reveals that Michael is actually a demon from the Bad Place. The so-called Good Place is his experimental torture neighborhood, every other resident is a demon in disguise, and the four humans were chosen to make each other miserable forever. Everything that follows is about what happens after that mask comes off.

Personality and comedy

Ted Danson plays Michael as a mix of showman, nervous middle manager, and wide-eyed tourist. As a demon he is gleefully petty and theatrical, and as a would-be human he throws himself into human customs with clumsy enthusiasm, at one point responding to Chidi's lessons about mortality with a full midlife crisis.

The funniest and most touching thing about Michael is his slow conversion. A being created to torment people learns ethics from the humans he was supposed to torture, starts caring about them, and eventually puts himself at risk for them. Danson lets the change happen gradually, so it feels earned rather than sudden.

Key storylines

After the first-season twist, Michael reboots the neighborhood hundreds of times, and Eleanor sees through it every time. Facing exposure by his own demons, he strikes a deal with the humans in "Team Cockroach," and over season two the alliance turns into real friendship. When the group breaks into the Bad Place to reach the Judge, Michael gives up his own way out so Eleanor can escape.

He then bends the rules of the universe to give the humans a second chance on Earth, discovers that no one has been admitted to the real Good Place in more than 500 years, and helps design a fairer afterlife. In the finale, because he is not human and cannot use the exit door, the Judge grants his dearest wish: to live a human life on Earth.

Behind the scenes and legacy

Ted Danson, long beloved as Sam Malone on Cheers, was announced as Michael alongside Kristen Bell in January 2016. He and Bell were the only cast members who knew the show's big twist from the start. The character, created by Michael Schur, was modeled on the archangel Michael.

Danson received three consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, from 2018 to 2020, and won the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 2018. Critics widely praised his performance, which anchored the show for four seasons.
