Eleanor Shellstrop wakes up in the afterlife and is told she has earned a place in paradise. The trouble is that she knows she was not a good person, and she asks her assigned soulmate, ethics professor Chidi Anagonye, to teach her how to become one before anyone notices.
Their neighbors include the elegant, name-dropping Tahani Al-Jamil and Jason Mendoza, who is hiding a secret of his own. Michael, the architect who designed the neighborhood, and Janet, its all-knowing helper, round out a cast that keeps surprising each other.
Created by Michael Schur, the show is full of twists, so the guides here keep summaries light. It ran for four seasons on NBC and made moral philosophy surprisingly funny.
