Jason Mendoza arrives in the Good Place as Jianyu, a monk who has taken a vow of silence, which is the only way he can keep from blowing his cover. Played by Manny Jacinto, he is the show's lovable chaos agent and a die-hard Jacksonville Jaguars fan.

Who is Jason Mendoza?

Jason is a Filipino American amateur DJ and small-time drug dealer from Jacksonville, Florida. When he dies, the afterlife places him in the Good Place under the identity of Jianyu Li, a Taiwanese Buddhist monk who has sworn a vow of silence. Jason figures that saying nothing is his best chance of not getting caught, so at first he simply stays quiet.

Once he reveals himself to Eleanor, he joins Chidi's ethics lessons, where he is an even worse student than she is. Back home his life revolved around his DJ dreams, his best friend Pillboi, his father Donkey Doug, and a lot of bad plans. He died suffocating inside a safe during a botched restaurant robbery.

Personality and comedy

Jason is the most impulsive person in any room. He believes most problems can be solved by throwing a Molotov cocktail, tells long stories about his Florida misadventures, and treats the Jacksonville Jaguars, and quarterback Blake Bortles in particular, with religious devotion. His comedy is rooted in total, cheerful confidence in ideas that are obviously terrible.

Yet the show refuses to treat him as just the dumb one. Jason is kind, loyal, and completely free of malice, and every so often he blurts out something genuinely wise. Manny Jacinto plays him with such warmth that the character's sweetness lands as hard as his punchlines.

Key storylines

Jason's most important relationship is with Janet. In season one, appreciating how kind she is to him, he marries her, and the bond survives reboots, memory wipes, and Janet's attempt to replace him with a rebound boyfriend named Derek. He also has a relationship with Tahani, his assigned soulmate, during the long middle stretch of the show.

When Michael sends the humans back to Earth, Jason returns to Jacksonville to try to save his father and Pillboi from their criminal lives, with mixed results. In season three he gives a heartfelt speech about the human condition that helps persuade the Judge, and he and Janet officially start dating. In the finale he is the first of the group to decide he is ready to leave, though a lost necklace for Janet keeps him waiting in the woods for a very long time first.
