On The Good Place, Janet's story runs through Jason Mendoza (Husband), Michael (Best Friend), Eleanor Shellstrop (Friend), Chidi Anagonye (Friend), and Tahani Al-Jamil (Friend).

Janet from The Good Place: Sitcomdle character card

Who is Janet?

Janet is a programmed being who serves as the afterlife neighborhood's source of information and assistance. Residents call her name and she pops into existence beside them, ready to answer any question in the universe or conjure anything they ask for. When people call her a robot or a woman, she corrects them politely: she is not a robot, and she is not a girl.

She is also more important than she looks. Each neighborhood relies on a Janet as its operating system, and Michael's Janet was stolen from the Good Place to run his fake one. When she is reset, she comes back with no memories but keeps a little more of herself each time, which is how a helpful program begins to turn into someone.

Personality and comedy

D'Arcy Carden plays Janet with a fixed, sunny smile and perfect customer service delivery, which makes her occasional glitches hilarious. After a reboot she runs at diminished capacity, and later her hidden feelings make her glitch in strange, very visible ways. Try to reset her and she begs for her life on cue, then cheerfully reminds you she has no feelings.

Carden also plays every other version of Janet the show invents, including the rude, eye-rolling Bad Janet, the flat, emotionless Neutral Janet, and the over-the-top Disco Janet. In one episode she plays all four human leads as Janet copies, a showcase for Carden's range.

Key storylines

In season one Eleanor and Chidi kill Janet with her off switch, she is rebooted with no memories, and while relearning she grows fond of Jason, whom she marries. Michael's later reboots erase the marriage, but not her feelings. In season two those buried feelings cause glitches, and to cope she creates Derek, a rebound boyfriend with a very limited understanding of the world.

As the series goes on, Janet becomes Michael's closest friend and a full member of the group, using her powers to rescue them from demons and from the Judge's plan to reset humanity. She and Jason reconcile and start dating in season three. In the finale, Jason gives her a necklace he made before leaving through the final door.

Behind the scenes and legacy

When D'Arcy Carden's casting was announced in March 2016, the press release described a character named Janet Della-Denunzio, a violin salesperson with a checkered past. Writer Megan Amram later admitted the description was a deliberate hoax to protect the show's secrets.

Carden earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020. "Janet(s)," the episode in which she plays the whole main cast, won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.
